Euler, i just read your tank build, especially about the death of all your fish. I'm very inclined to think that the chaeto brought in something, very likely marine velvet and possibly brooklynella. Both are very fast killers, with velvet being slightly worse than brook.

there are three options for you right now if there are no other living organisms.

1. leave it fallow for 9 weeks.
2. apply copper and formalin into the tank and let it run for 4 weeks.
3. completely drain the tank, filter, and everything and let them dry under the sun for a whole day.

id go with the tried and true AI's i can always add some aglea growing red shimmer down the road should I want them. however now i am good with my growth and not changing a thing. except for maybe my sump at some point. not sure though.

I followed your recomendation #3 with some modifications, moving everything to a new tank: new substrate, huge water change (90%), new heaters, skimmer, return and powerhead pumps and I'll wait 9 week 'til next fish...

should I do anything to the corals and tridacna?

Euler, doing a 90% water change is not enough. you must let it dry out completely to kill all of the parasites. don't underestimate the power of marine velvet as you have already experienced it.

you will need to have two separate quarantine tanks, one for corals, and the other for fish. the one for corals can have live rocks and sand as substrate, but the one for fish should have nothing other than PVC fittings for hiding. the reason you shouldn't have live rocks/sand in a fish's QT is because live rocks/sand absorb copper and make treatment difficult. Copper is the only cure for marine velvet, and a recommended treatment for marine ich as well.

another option if you don't want two QT is to buy all your corals and QT them first. After they all go into the DT, then use that QT for fish. this will double the total QT obviously.

Well, here goes, finaly an update again. It's been so long since my last update in this thread (I got realy sad after the big disaster). I don't know where to begin or what to say. It has become so much more than just some reef talk and I want to keep it that way. ...and, so, here's an outline:

ok, I known, I know, life has changed considerably in the last few months and maybe you think: "reef goals are just not all that important anymore". But let me tell you something - I talked to my wife about our new priorities, and she yelled at me "DO NOT GIVE UP ON YOUR PROJECT, just resize it!"

well, let me show the "new project":

with that said, here is "the change of scope":


1) all the stuff marked with a "X" were removed from this project, that means:

- return tank, frag and refugium tanks selled;

- all steel and wood to recycle guys; :thumbsup:

- unfortunatelly, sump goes underneath the main tank (ow my gosh, please, please, pity my knees...);

- quarantine tank and its sump goes to my laundry room (there is a lot of space overthere) and will need another gabinet.




2) main tank:


- size remains the same: 98 (long) x 30 (width) x 25 (height)

- I decide to make a coast-to-coast overflow - it is seems to be an excelent idea in opposite to one corner overflow.

- undeaneath the gabinet as much space as possible without vertical braces - as I said I hate to be in my knees (it is very painful to me 'cause I got hit 3 times practicing skating when I's youger)


3) main sump:


- new dimensions are: 65 (long) x 28 (wide) x 18 (height)

- 5 sessions for:

a) two filter socks that are used to pre-filter the water flowing into the overflow area;

b) heaters area;

c) skimmer area;

d) reactors and frags area.

e) return area.

I'm assuming I'm not going to use a refugium, let's see what happening. :thumbsup:



As in as:


- main tank: all in glass with polished and beveled edges, starfire for front panel, regular one to everything else - made by myself;

- sump: all in regular glass - made by myself

- overflow box: coast-to-coast approach, using beananimal overflow - made by my self.

- stand: powder coated steel frame contructed out of 6" I beams; projected to support 1,8 tons (ohh my gosh)



I'd like to hear from you any suggestion about this new setup, circulation, illumination and every else.

It's quite long now you asked me about LEDs.

To be frank. i am Metal Halide guy. even my new built I choose MH. T5s and LEDs ar good for additional lighting but if you think that your live stock with depend on LEDs or T5 than for get it....

T5 can give you good result but if you are using Zeovit complete product.
