Do you catch those fish yourself?

No, lol, most are not from our waters, except the Neon Gobies and the Jawfish.

The clean up crew is all local though.

Where did you get the eggcrate. I went to Loes and they looked at me like I was crazy when I asked. Thanks Pat

The "egg crate" is usually with the ceiling tiles etc, it is actually used for the lights you install in drop ceilings.

I get it at Home Depot, right where the ceiling tiles are and to my surprise, the last time I bought some about a week ago, it was actually labeled "egg crate". What I also noticed is, that it went up in price :(

Awesome tank Speckled ! :D Maybe one day I could check it out in person? I'm moving to Hollywood FL next month so we'll be neighbors. :) I just scored an eight foot 250g tank on craigslist for only $100 and plan on making a foam wall similar to yours. Thanks for the inspiration!

Happy Holidays Everyone!

hey speckled, first off i know its redundant but your tank is amazing :) do you have water flow behind the "wall" and if so what are you using to achieve it? part of your closed loop?
thank you

There is no flow behind the wall, the intention was to have it right against the back glass. There might be some pockets or spaces though, but I can’t see because the back is painted black and there is no way to see back there.

So far, I would call the foam wall a success. I have coralline algae growing everywhere, on the fake stuff and on the real rock, feather dusters too, but the aptaisias are only growing out of the fake rock :D :D :D

Here are some recent shots, under day lights, and under actinics.

Has anyone that has done the foam rock wall had issues with getting thier skimmer to work? Mine has not been skimming anything since i got the foam rock wall.... its been a month and a half, and I'm thinkin thats probably not the healthiest...

I know this may be a stupid question, but can anyone (or has anyone) ever attempted this on a tank with water already in it? Maybe during a 50% WC or something? If not, I guess I'll need to upgrade to a new tank!! :)

I have no problems with my skimmer, wet, dry whatever I set it for it skimms away......

simply beautiful! job well done Speckled! Your cat seems as bad as my cat and dog when I'm doing work hahaha.

Once again great job!

Well you oficially just changed my mind. I've got a thread started here asking to see pictures of different colored backs so I could figure out what color to paint it, but not now!! My tank is in my garage, I haven't painted anything, I have lots of live rock that is no longer live, from my teardown and lots of sand sitting in the basement!! I've found my next project!!! Thanks for the writeup and pics, can't wait to get this one started!!

jherrin215, you won't regret it. Not only does the foam rock wall make your tank appear bigger and more open, it presents unlimited possibilities for mounting frags all over, I can't wait until mine is filled in. Don't be skimpy with the rocks, the bigger and the more you mount on the structure, the better it will look.

How much time did you actually spend on your wall grouper?? Also how did you apply your epoxy to the wall once finished?? I want to make sure if I do this it's right and not something I'm going to have to worry about down the road. Thanks!!
