Foam Rockscape version 2.0

Looks great! Makes me rethink doing the Rockwall now. I noticed most of the rocks are smaller pieces?

I started with a big bin of various pieces of old dryrock. I did a lot of breaking to get get the pieces to manageable sizes. There are big and small. For reference this is a 120 tank 2x4x2 so even the small rocks are still fist sized.

My goal was more rock and less foam.

Right on i didn't think you were +1 didn't know if i missed a trick as i am working on mine now.
I agree it does look good seeing the other threads here helped me make up my mine to do one;)

I think a big part of it looking natural is the process of "tweasing" off the extra foam with pliers. THis gives a similar texture to real rock and allows to do some carving to get the look you want. It is a different than than the soft serve ice-cream mounds.

Granted it all looks good once covered in coraline algae and coral!

I really like how natural you made it look. What type of expanding foam did you use for this? Any improvements/ suggestions if I were to try this myself. thanks.

The sand covers the foam so it is not black and matches the rock. The epoxy is basically the glue for the sand and at the same time giving the foam an extra protective layer against corrosion by saltwater and UV.

exactly. I used black pond foam from Lowes. the are several brands out there.

Lets see an update on this!

An update on this project:

AEFW!!!! were discovered in my tank. I will caution you not that if you build a one piece rockscape you are stuck with it! you cannot remove encrusted corals and invasive corals like meteor shower create problems by running and killing indiscriminately. You cannot move /remove rocks or corals to cut or change locations as acros grow.

I will not do a rockscape like this again. it was a fun project and I was very pleased with the outcome but there are too many drawbacks!

To remove all of the acros from my tank i had to remove all of the rockwork. Then place the huge coral covered structures on my back patio and attack it with a mosons hammer. CORAL FRAGS EVERYWHERE!!!

Doing this also disturbed 1year + worth of trapped detritus causing a massive nutrient spike.

i have since rescaped with the rock i could salvage + new liverock. i am still managing the nutrient spike from disturbing the sand. The new scape is all drystack.

Remember the endgame when scaping your tank. Think about what corals will grow fastest and biggest and growth patterns. Plan accordingly. Also leave room to place corals at various levels to allow for growth.

A nice rockscape is well.... nice, but my goal is growing coral and seeing a thriving reeftank (not rocktank).

keeping rock off of the walls allows for better water movement and the ability to place corals on all sides of the rocks. hoping when things grow out ill have a 3 dimensional reef instead of a "wall of coral"

I lost a few coral dealing with the AEFW. Most all of my coals that made it were fragged with all of the moving and dipping.

Things are looking better though....
