Foam stuff for the "rock work" look????

Great thread! Im setting up a 90 gallon tank. I was going to copy a friend who took some base rock and LR rubble and glued it to a piece of acrylic then leaned it againstthe back wall, but now i think im getting the great stuff. Im going to spray it on acrylic instead of the actual tank.
Question: could i use the purple pvc stuff then cover with pvc cement? This way it has a purple color.

oh yeah, i used great stuff to turn my shell goose decoys into floaters about 5 years ago and even though they only spen 4 months in salt water and the rest of the year in a damp shed the foam is in great shape.

this is the effect after i used the foam since last year nov

the gsp had cover the expose foam

still dont see what people are using , no one was clear as to if they were putting liverock rubble in the great stuff , then coating it with a marine \primer\paint .. I guess my main concern is if you "screw up" how hard will it be to get off of glass..

what methods After you applied the foam did you use?

It's easy to peel off the glass... you don't have to cover the foam w/ any paint or epoxy. Just keep your calcium and carbonate levels high and you should eventually get corraline coverage over most of it.

Peace,
John H.

this is the rocky wall that i made to conseal my IOF

can you see the over hanging clif ??

if you notice there i a eggcrate below the rocks. reason of using the eggcrate is that i am able to remove the rocky walls with ease in future if i change my rockscape. as the rocks are bounded to the eggcrate not to the tank wall.

i did not coat the whole eggcrate with the form; instate i uses it as a bonding agent. Between each contact point of the rocks and the eggcrate.

some tips to follow is that use a heavier rock on the bottom and lighter rocks on top so that the structure will be stable. bear in mind is that dont use so much of the form as they are very bounyance.

this is a bonding between rocks the white stuff are the form. and i uses dead acro branches that wash up from the sea to create a much more natural look. so that ur rocky wall will not just be a flat vertical rockscape

this is how it looks from the top

this is the finish product of the whole tank without corals
blue lights are use to let the coraline to grow while i cycle the tank

Hey DRZL what kind of lights are you using? Is the the orbit? I think that may be my new choice for my 29 gal.

joe:rollface:

Im glad you like it, I hate it!..:D..that is a severely modded hood, it comes stock only w/ PCs and one loud a$$ fan....mine has 2 quiet ones and 250W DE Pheonix bulb in it, DIY blue moonlights and have one act 03 PC for dusk/morning.
I hate it because even though it is a bit low profile, i cant stick a decent reflector in it, i had to bend the flat one it came with.
If I could do it over today i would the aquaspacelight or the maristar? i think its called...look into those or if u look "economical";) look at the jebo ODYSSEA i think it is...it depends what you want your tank to be.

DRZL - I didn't see any mention of what you or sunny used to coat the foam. What'd you guys use?

My background is just full of aragonite and pieces of base rock here and there....I didnt see the need to paint over it as it is inert anyways, plus things are encrusting including some SPS:), coralline's also taking a liking to it. Dont believe the nay sayers, search for tanu he was TOTM he nevered covered anything and his tank is downright P.I.M.P.

Phhewwww im tired of typinng:rollface: ::beer::

Sunny

How are you keeping it from falling forward though ? I do plan on using egg crate but not sure how to keep it against the wall , I suppose i will slope a good bit at the bottom =/

im going to sprinkle it with with crushed coral also , i kind of like that look.

Lost my 55g due to xenia so im going to dry out all of my live rock i had for it ( 50 something pounds ) and crush it up and do the method you are doing.

I got a question can i make mock with this. Like use cured argocrete rock and then build a cliff such "Wall" type structure then paint it and let it cure then put it in my tank with things in it already?

I 've seen a foam block that you can carve into a back drop advertised in tropical fish hobbyist a couple years back -- hasnt anybody else heard of it?
