Foam stuff for the "rock work" look????

How are you going to have 118X turnover. From the looks of your stats, you won't even come close to that. Do you have some Tunze streams on order?

Peace,
John H.

Thats figuring for 200gph head loss on the mag 12 too....muahahah

I just realized thats complete turnover every 30 seconds. I don't even know if thats safe. My fish are going to be swimming in a toilet bowl thats constantly flushing haha. Maybe i'll stay clear of the buggers

I dont know if this has been posted, but why not cover the foam with a layer of black silicon, and pack sand into it. Ive used this method for years in my terrariums, except i used soil instead of sand (with running waterfalls over it). No problems whatsoever.

You also dont need to worry about having the foam in contact with water, since the silicon will act like a shield.

gatohoser,

What size tank is all this flow going into? The 90 gallon or the 12 gallon nano. If it's going into the 90... I calculate about 40X turnover and if going in the nano... it's 300X turnover.

If you were going to have 118X turnover, you'd be putting this all in a 30 gallon tank?

Peace,
John H.

ALRIGHT EVERYONE --- I FOUND THE COMPANY THAT MAKES FOAM BACKDROPS AS WELL AS WHOLE LANDSCAPES FOR YOUR AQUARIUM-- AND IN SEVERAL STYLES!!! NO MORE D I Y !!

AND IT'S ACTUALLY A BIOLOGICAL FILTER !!!

I found it at the pet store yesterday set up for frogs---- IT'S CALLED SCENIC FILTRATION

I was just on the web site --they are in South America.. scienfilter.com I think --- run a search, if any one buys it -- post a pic because I was thinking about getting a cave wall backdrop. Your welcome!!!

ummm...anything can become bio-alive, a suction cup w/ coralline on it, is alive. plastic coils of a coil denitrator become populated by aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, an thus become a bio filter, and guess what, its alive.
Dont fall for the little catch phrases, they know better.

MOE, that is an awesome idea. Thanks for the link. The silicon and sand would work great for those going barebottom.

It's been done before a lot but Bomber and a lot of other strict BB guys don't like the idea because they believe it would still trap detritus. The jury is still out in my mind. I'd love to see any1's results with this.

the sci filter is carved foam -- you can carve it further if you want to customize it, you'll just mess up the decorative paint they put. --- I was feeling the terrarium yesterday. It has air hoses that are built within it ---

I was just helping the guys who were interested out-- uummm thanks

one last thing--then I'm done posting--- I just received an email quote from them for a 20g H wall background is $24 shipping is $12 -- not too bad ---- if anyone decides to go with one --please email me a pic --

Which particular idea are you referring to?

Well after taking me ummm hours to read this....I am inspired to try the foam. I have a 90g that is going to be a trigger's new home. I won't be able to have corals to add color and excitement so maybe this way I can add things to the background to liven it up. I'm going bb also, and I can extend the background on the the bottom. Thanx for all the info from everyone. And also thanx for posting when things didn't go as planned. We can learn from the mistakes.

If you perfectly seal off the foam and I mean perfectly, then you should not get any trapping of detritus.

My worry would be whether the silicone could grow coralline very well. I know it tends to take a lot longer for coralline to appear on the silicone. I don't know why covering it is such an issue. Coralline coverage in a properly maintained tank should be close to 100% by a year.

John H.
