Food

What food is everyone using? I have been feeding Rods Reef and Omega One Flake formula II. But I think that flake food is clouding up the tank. Tried Docs Eco once. It was the free stuff from PN night.

What say you?

Frozen rotifers, Rods, PE mysis and new life spectrum thera A pellets in my auto feeder. Occasional Nori for the tangs. I soak frozen food occasionally in selcon and zoe.

I think schplitter posted a recipe for his own food. I been thinking of doing it, but not sure of the cost effectiveness

Prime Reef flakes, PE mysis, and Larry's. Occasionally some frozen Formula 1 or 2 and frozen brine just because I've been trying to clear old stuff out of the freezer.

I use NLS pellets,Larry's Reef or Rod's depending on who has what, PE mysis,Doc'c eco eggs which the fish go nuts for,and I occasionally make my own like I'm getting ready to do since some of my fish like chunky food (Squirrel fish and Harlequin Tusk).
Couple scallops, raw shrimp, couple sheets of nori, a little selcon . Toss that in a food processor with some ro/di then I put it in a ziplock and lay it in a flat layer to freeze so its easy to break off chunks. Everyone seems to like it.

NLS five different sizes, Docs Eco Eggs, Ocean Nutrition Formula One, Formula Two, Prime Reef and Brine shrimp plus. Red and green nori. Hikari mysis shrimp, jumbo Hikari mysis shrimp, bay scallops, fresh shrimp, occasional Rods if I'm feeling rich.

If I don't have any of my homemade food ready, I feed them some Ocean Nutrition formula 2 flakes and new life spectrum pellets for their first feeding in the afternoon. Then in the evening, I give them some Rods with a pinch of BRS Reef Chile and a few drops of Vitachem from Boyd Enterprises.

I also put out some Nori in a Innovative Marine grazer a few times a week. Since it lasts about 2 days before they clean out the grazer, it winds up that they have Nori about half of the week.

That's cause you're feeding the whole ocean, no wonder you need a 15 foot skimmer!!!

This is the latest batch I made:

$14.00 5# bag of seafood from Sam's (uncooked & frozen)
$3.00 Package of Nori from asian market in south city
$1.00 Garlic (I may leave this out next time as it stinks)
$22.00 PE Mysis
$8 Brine Shrimp
-------
$40.00

Round that up to $50 if you want with the bags I guess and if I forgot something. I have been feeding this for over a year now and I will have a ton left. I feed about a sandwich bag full per week in my 110. I do also throw in some pellets or flake once in awhile.

The main reason I like it is because I can control what's going in. I was especially concerned about phosphates as I like to feed a lot. It works for me at least and the fish love it.

And phosphates/nitrates are good? Anything for coral growth?

No, it's because I understand the value of proper nutrition and a healthy varied diet for over 100 saltwater fish and 100's of different corals:) I also have about 50 times the water volume of your signature tank;)

Yeah. They seem to be fine. Last week when tested they were undetectable but I do run a biopellet reactor, fugue and a very oversized skimmer.

I used to throw in some reef chilly but the only thing I saw is a rise in phosphates so I stopped ASAP.

I feed Doc's Eco Eggs, but I have to say I always end up tossing more than half out because it expires before I finish the food. I wish it was sold in much smaller portions. Some of us don't have +100 systems.
I also feed a mix I make of nori and spirulina when needed.
;p

The guys at docs said it doesn't go bad since it's been brined I threw out a bunch also until I asked if they had smaller containers of it.
