For all you anthais experts, mixing P. flavoguttatus and P. aurulentus

I have a single male P. aurulentus in my tank currently. He is growing and starting to show some beautiful little yellow streamers on his tail...anyways I digress . I am planning on adding a group of P. flavoguttatus as well. I am pretty sure the anthias will all get along but thought I would throw it out here for any and all thoughts. My P. aurulentus is really quite peaceful and mellow, always out, and always getting plenty of food when it is feeding time. I am aware of the nature of the P. flavoguttatus and the finicky/delicate nature of the fish. I think they will do well in my tank as tankmates are all peaceful and mellow.

I had flavo's for a bit. They did great in a FO with my asfur and niger. Always out, ate aggressively. Then I transfered them to the reef during my move. Never saw them again. They ALWAYS hid. So, I don't find them terribly delicate. Just not a fish that likes LOTS of other fish around.

Interesting that they were always out and eating well with larger more aggressive fish like an asfur and a niger, and then went into hiding in the reef! Maybe it was just because there were more hiding spots in the reef?

Anyway, they're beautiful fish and much less fussy than the Pseudanthias lori (very similar in appearance) in my experience.

It was either the much brighter lighting, or the chaose of my heavily stocked reef.

Yep, read that about yours Peter, it made me pause...but I am getting them anyways. I have a pretty active reef with a lot of fish...no aggressive fish at all, they are all peaceful and mind their own business. Only two larger fish, a Foxface and smallish Black Tang, in the tank and they are really mellow as well. My plan will be to remove the Tang and Foxface as they get bigger.

our flavogutattus are NASTY...to each other as well as the sunburst we had with them. we've had the flavs for a quite awhile now, but their aggression is reaching the point of them trying to pick each other off in true anthias fashion. they make our borbonius (not in same tank) look like sissies.

Bryan, I am getting them through mobileaquatics..Richard and Frank... I may not go through with it though if they really are aggressive. I am going to contact mobileaquatics and talk to them as well as a few folks that I know have them in their tanks. I DO NOT want any aggressive anthias in my tank and I have never heard them being aggressive so they may have 5 available if I dont go through with getting them. I'll keep you posted. I really do wnat them but I wont risk aggression in my tank for them.

we had a trio that did fine together for months, then all of a sudden, the two dominant fish killed the "weakest" of the trio. now the dominant fish is always chasing the other specimen.

there are plenty of hiding places, and the weaker fish gets plenty to eat, so i'm hoping they will make it for another couple of months until we move (the only way to catch them is to break down the tank).

The aggression mentioned is a risk with most anthias, especially those we can't ID as male/female very easily (even though they can ).

I wouldn't worry too much about such a small anthias being aggressive to other fish species in the tank, unless you plan on some really whimpy fish These anthias are, after all, pretty dinky.

i'm halfway considering putting the troublemaker in with the borbonius so it learns some manners, but i think it would be dwarf fuzzy or scorp food before that happened...

No fishy delivery at BAYMAC, they will have to ship in a few weeks. They need to hold onto them for a while, make sure they are eating and healthy . I think I am going to give it a go. I could lose them over time I suppose, that would be a bummer. Hopefully they will do well and not be to shy in the tank or to aggressive with each other.

The seahorses love them and chase them around out of curiosity. The anthias are not too fond and run and hide. You enter the room and they hide and then they come back out and hang. But YIKES are they mean to each other.

I was thinking about trying some flavos as well but I've already got several Bimacs who are...let's just say, somewhat boisterous. Don't think they would mix too well.

Probably not. I have heard these guys are timid things...interesting how the rip on each other though. I guess I will find out.

We might be getting all males. I have yet to see a picture of what a female "looks" like...

They are trying to get me a large one and few small ones. I'll keep you posted when I get some pictures next week. I should be able to get an idea of sizes directly from Richard or Frank once they get them form the wholesaler.

I wanted to give an update on my P. Flavoguttatus group. I got some nice pictures of the group Frank at Mobile Aquatics is holding onto for me and fattening up for their trip up North . They look good, really beautiful. They are all eating well. They hid for the first few days and then ventured out and seem to be more social now. My tank is pretty busy with fish, not aggressive, just busy. I think they will hide for sure at first, it will be interesting to see how many venture out, what they do with each other and my P. aurulentus...he is pretty big and gets around the tank pretty well, not shy at all. I hope they are not to shy when introduced and never venture out. This seems to have happened to a few others, the fish are eating and comfortable in quarantine but once introduced to a full blown reef tank with tankmates they hide and never make it out. I hope this doesn't occur but we shall see. The plan is to get them at the end of May, they will go into my holding reef which is currently void of fish. They will hang out for a month or so in that tank getting all fattened up and recovering from the shipping. I will then introduce them to the main tank. I may get all six if the extra one is not spoken for and put five in the main reef and one in my nanocube that is a really mellow environment. Or maybe even three in each tank...I really would like a group of five in the main tank though. I will have to see what I decied when the time comes.
