For Moray lovers... I can't help myself...

I wasn't going to post pictures until I actually got this (getting 2!) but this has been my desktop background for a month now and I can't help but share. I'm importing two of these and as far as I know (I've been researching and looking for them for 6 years) these will be the first 2 ever brought into the US. I have a contact at the Smithsonian that confirmed he's never had or seen dead specimens either. This pic was taken by the collector... I expect to have them the week of the 15th.

Of course I have to turn this into a guessing game... who can ID this guy?

Tanks! It does look a little, doesn't it? If you look at it from the side it looks a bit different... the curved jaws give it away...

Enchelycore anatina? Man, you are good at finding awesome eels. More pics when they arrive please, and side shots of the face. ;)

Something told me you'd get it ;)

For sure... I'm going to have a buddy who actually knows how to take pictures (I do not) and get mad pictures of them.

Awesome!! I'll admit, I am more than a little jealous. You have an amazing connection, I asked my guy about a year ago and he just laughed. Definitely going to need pics when they arrive. Watch the fingers.

Apparently they aren't at all rare in their native range... there just aren't any aquarist wholesalers up that far.

Right now they are at 68-9 degrees, I'm slowly bringing my 150 down to that temperature.

You wouldn't be the person that sent questions to Marco about this Eel on WWM a while back would you? I remembered reading the letter, and just looked it up again....Good letters if it is.:D

Lol... good memory dude! That it is... not sure how old that it now, but I've been looking for these darn things for 6 years.

Awesome! You don't by chance have a photo album up online of your eels do you? I always happen across one or two pics of yours in a thread that leave me wanting to see more. From what I gather you have a pretty great collection of them.

Could you give a ballpark figure of what these guys go for. The rarity and lack of demand seems like it would make the few collected quite valuable

Everything I have pictures of is probably on this site... I think I have a pic of my Kidako somewhere (he passed away two years ago); I never got a pic of my berndti, and the rest are pretty common. Right now I'm working on E. ramosa and G. zonipectus, which are both very rare. If and when I get them I'll get pics up.

The animals themselves weren't that expensive, but with fees associated with catching and importing them the total is very prohibitive - to the point where I don't see any retailers ordering them (at least from this guy) because it would be impossible to see a margin. I posted on other sites back in June to see if anyone else was interested (the admins on this site took my ad down), the number I posted was about what I'm paying for them (when you figure in customs fees and travel on this side).

Best of luck getting them. I'm a huge fan of eels, but I have to live vicariously through people on this site because I don't have a tank large enough to house any. Well other than a GDM I suppose.

Had some footage of one of these in the wild in the small part of the NatGeo WILD program on morays tonight that I caught. Pretty awesome. It was a cool show!

Just set tivo to record the encore showing.... so bummed I missed it. The web page has an anatina & what looks like a few javanicus... wicked cool.

Haven't been able to comment much thanks to finals but those pics are sweeeet. The fangtooth's coloration is really beautiful. Can't wait to see them together in the same tank. Interesting that the one in there gets along with a dragon, as that is just giving me ideas for the future haha.
