Would you be interested in showing some of the rest of us where you go and what you get? Like a field trip? I remember reading in one of the other threads there were a few people that went to cocoa and somewhere else. Maybe after the holidays?
there's a lady that's around here and the seahorse forum named samala that may have some spots. she has some beautiful planted tanks, and lives in melbourne. hopefully she'll read this and tell us some spots. i'm setting up a sh tank, and am looking for diff. seagrasses.
OMG! i will have to keep my eye on this thread, i (and my freind) have been wanting to do that for a LONG TIME, but dont know where to go and all......wow, thanks for posting this man, nice....
There are some neat looking puffers being caught in Cocoa in the Indian River. I have one in my tank that I caught on a hook fishing, he is about 8" and quite a swimmer, which is what I wanted at the time for my 210 tank.
I have seen several people talking about going to the beach around here to get crabs and other little stuff. Didnt even know all of what was out there!
Well, i know that you can find Blenny's, Gobies, Sand Stars, Crabs, Shrimp, Sand Dollars, *Puffers*, and small fish, that i cannot remebmer the name for...
I think there are 3 different types of puffers in the Indian River location at Cocoa. I have the one that is most common, and as far as what I could research on it, they call it a "southern puffer". It is completely white bellied, and the rest is a brown color with neon green tiny spots all over him. I just love the fact that he is a swimmer and always moving, not afraid of people getting close to the tank at all! My porcupine puffer I used to have always stayed in the back corner and never swam at all except up and down in his corner, and that's where I had to feed him so he would eat. I also like the fact that this southern puffer doesn't have the spikes that the porcupine did. We didn't have to worry about getting stuck when we took him off the hook, he was barely hooked so that is why he probably didn't die on us. People that fish there really don't like it when they catch one though because they slam them on the ground and stuff. So cruel. Made me wanna throw them in with the sharks.

1slapnuts you have a pic of your guy? it's cool you have a story like that about one of your fish-for when people come over.
that stuff angers me too when people treat living things that way. they just aren't right, lol. that same treatment is given to 80% of the animals that end up in nicely packaged containers in your grocery though. people just don't like to think of it when they are eating it. that's why i became a vegetarian 15 years ago.
Now that I have the photo thing figured out.....lol
This is a red snapper I could have brought home, but figured the teeth he had might be too good for eating my triggers! So I threw him back...
Here are a couple photos of the puffer I have (Southern Puffer) that I caught at Cocoa as well
Very hard to get any photos of him swimming when the hallides are on because he doesn't hold still, all the photos came out fuzzy, but that's why I love him!
I used to go out to Jetty Park in Cocoa for snails and hermit crabs. The had a rock wall that was full of them. But about 4 months ago i went out there and they had it blocked off. So no more of that going on.
There is a place called Peanut Island down in West Palm Beach. They have a snorkling place with a reef right off shore. I was thinking about making the trip down there and see how it is. Has anyone from here ever been down there?
I have been to peanut island a few times. I have camped on the island a couple times. You can onyl get there by boat. There is a water taxi that will take you there for $7. I have caught hi-hats, blue legged hermits, snails, french angels, tangs, damsels, and a few other types of fish. You can literaly grab blue legged hermits by the handful! The north side of the island is a party area. Lots of boats and everyone is wasted from drinking. I actually saw two girls riding a jetski naked one time. Dont let this scare you though if yoru not into that stuff. The east side of the island is very calm. You cant bring your boat near the shore there. Its a protected snorkeling area. Bringing a boat there is a plus though. Luckily my friend has a 18 foot seadoo jet boat that we brought out there. The camp sites there are awesome! I recomend the camping there. Its a really nice little island. Only place better is islamorada. I have a few pics i'll post up of the place. Too bad I moved to Dallas Texas about 1.5 months ago or I would show some of you where to go down there.
Ok so now whoever has a boat lets go. I have a 24 foot camper we can take. Sounds like lots of fun on the north side also. lol Im down for a weekend trip or something.
I was originally thinking of the mid coast area there is no way I have time to go down to west palm for the night.....although that would be a great little vacation! I was also thinking once the weather started to warm up...but well its pretty dang warm now.
