Formalin vs Uronema

So far,my experience is that formalin bath does not prevent uronema.
Every time I dip my fish for 45 minutes and sometimes they still get uronema during quarantine.

Does it mean

1) They are immune to formalin

2) My formalin is expired/bad

Are you sure the system you add the fish to is free of Uronema?

Also, once a fish is actually infected, a single bath/dip may not be enough.

Alternatively you could try Chloroquine Phosphate as treatment.

Yeah. its free of uronema. brand new tank.

This happened after 2nd formalin dip of ttm.

Can't find pure chloroquine and don't want to pay thousands for a script and vet visit.

Can anyone explain the logic of doing a formalin bath a profilactic to all quarantined fish??

I ask because to cure Uronema, I believe you need to do a series of baths and even the water in the qt tank needs to have a low concentration of formalin. This is what I understood in this thread:

If this is the case, one or 2 formalin bath would not do anything to a fish that has Uronema with out showing signs.

thanks

The formalin bath should kill Uronema, Brooklynella and similar skin parasites.
I would not quickly discount it on the basis of one person reporting failure of the process. The dosage may have been wrong or the formalin wasn't stabilized and had become ineffective.
Another option could be that the parasites had already penetrated the slime coat of the fish and where protected by it. By its nature, a short bath of any kind can only reach the parasites that are on top or in the upper layer of the slime coat.

Fish highly prone to Uronema should probably be treated more aggressively with long term baths with either formalin or Chloroquine Phosphate.

From my own experience I know that formalin baths are effective against Brooklynella.

ThRoewer,

what do you mean that formalin was not stabilized?
do you need to stabilize it ?

above you say that you can use either formalin or Chloroquine Phosphate.
what is the protocol for using CP for Uronema?

thanks a lot
