Found a Regal Angel

Well, I stopped into a chain store here in the Pittsburgh area (Burtons Total Pet)and they had a Regal Angel from the Indian ocean.

What is the difference between the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea?

I have been wanting this fish for my reef tank(yes I know it might go after my coral but it is a baby and hopefully train it on frozen food) and I would love to rescue it from this chain store before someone buys it that has know idea how difficult this fish could be.

Has been at the store for a week and I am waiting to see if it starts to it before even buying it.

From LiveAquaria.com:

overview
With vivid vertical striations of blue, white, yellow, or orange on the body and pelvic fin, the Regal Angelfish deserves this distinctive name. Regal Angelfish from the Maldives and the Red Sea have a distinctive yellow breast, where their Indo-Pacific, Coral Sea, and Tahitian relatives normally have a blue/gray breast. This coloration is more prevalent in specimens that are more mature and are at least 4" in length. Regal Angelfish from the Red Sea, Maldives, Coral Sea, Fiji and Tahiti are good shippers and are harvested and handled with care, and normally will adapt more easily than their Indo-Pacific counterparts to the home aquarium.
The Regal Angelfish is more difficult to maintain than other species of angels so it should be introduced first so that it may stake out its territory in advance of other fish. A minimum of a 125 gallon tank with plenty of hiding places and live rock for grazing will offer a good environment. The Regal Angelfish may nip at large-polyped stony corals, an occasional soft coral and clam mantles, but may be kept with small-polyped stony corals and somewhat noxious soft corals.
To entice a Regal Angelfish to eat, use a diet of fresh shrimp and chopped seafood. The diet should also include herbivore preparations which include Spirulina and marine algae, and angelfish preparations containing sponges.

I would be weary of buying one from Burton's unless the price was right and it is eating already in their tank.

No i did not get it. Stopped today and it was still not eating much. Atleast the lady there is HONEST. I am now curious. I read up on them last night and looked closer and the angel today. The chest is a bluish grey, so I am not sure if this is more of a mature fish.

It is still a nice looking fish for $100

They are picky to get started eating. Once they start They do well. I had one before a disasterous tank crash 3 years ago and it took about a week to start eating but once it did it took food and took to the tank fine. I think the biggest part is to get them young enough.

My dilema is that I just found one on Reef Hot Spot for $200 but they do not guarantee it. Not even to arrive alive.

This one at Burtons is alive and only $100. I think it is from the Indo Pacific becuase of the bluis belly but it still has great colors.

I just need to see if it starts to eat or do i spend $200 and have no idea if the Reef Hot Spot one will arrive alive or if it even eating.

$100 for a regal?? That's a good price. Cheapest I have ever seen, I would be very tempted to pick it up

we did a group buy from them over a year ago, i got a porcupine puffer and some zoa frags and all are doing well. i think somebody got a purple tang in the buy because they were on sale at the time. on the site it says not guaranteed buy their live guarantee, i didnt see anything about DOA's not being covered. did you call them and they tell you that? that would be odd that they wouldnt cover DOA's.

I got mine from a place called NYaquatic and paid about $70 plus shipping to have them sent to me. You've waited this long, don't rush into getting a fish like this, they are HARD to keep, so you want to start with the best one possible. I know it's tough because the one in Burton's is staring you in the face, but trust me, unless you want to waste your money, make sure he is healthy first. (and by my guide to buying a healthy fish...step 1-buy from a reputable source already throws him out the window.) Be aware too that in certain areas of the world, the collection techniques still utilize cyanide, and even an eating individual can suddenly die if they are captured using this technique. If Burton's says your Angel came from the Indian Ocean, then I wouldn't take the chance. Find one from the Red Sea that is eating prepared foods.

I would be up for a group buy from them - or a split ,etc. I got a few items- all did well from our last group buy.

Yeah that was the group buy Ted and I did from ReefHotSpot last year. I got a purple tang for like $49 and a couple yellow tangs for $19. The fish were all in good shape but I would still recommend waiting for liveaquaria or divers den to have Regal angel you are looking for as they are number one in my book for online livestock. And Regals are tough fish at the beginning.

Well I'm ordering one (red sea) and a few other things I'v been looking for from Dave's Aquastock. He's putting in an order for sometime this week if anyone wants to get something special his prices are pretty great.

Kevin

Be careful about the red sea- supposedly it is very hard to get one from the red sea anymore. I hear that they say red sea but they are from Maldives. If it has ther greyish belly you know it is from the indo pacific. Does he make you take the fish with in 3 days? Because they can be very tricky. That is why I am trying to get he one from Burtons-They have been succesfully feeding mysis to him for last 3 days. If he does not keep eating I do not have to buy him.

Kevin,
Thanks for the tip. My Regal came in and wholly %^@^%#&^%. This fish was awesome looking and enormous. They were out of the med. So Dave ordered the med to larger and he is like 6in long and the colors are vibrant. Will take pics when lights come on.

Thanks Dave!!!!

I'm glad it worked out for you.

Mine is now eating everything....including pellets and flake food.

Best of luck and keep us posted.
