Found an Octo hitchiking...

He is only about the size of a dime. I dropped him into my 20g tank last night and haven't seen him since. How can I entice him out? What kind of damage can an octopus of this size do? Will he eat pods or what right now? If I can entice him out I will get a pic...unfortunately I didn't think top get the pic before I dropped him in.

Good luck. Had the same thing happen to me a week ago, when I spotted a dime sized octo crawling across the front glass of my new 110. I ran to another room to post the news here on RC, and he was gone by the time I got back. No sign of him since.

I assume the LR is from Tampa Bay? This is about the time that juveniles should be found. The eggs usually hatch in the spring.

They will probably stay hidden in the knocks and crannies of the rock. Aside from eating a few small crustaceans, they probably will cause no major problems. If they survive, they will reach adult golfball size in several months.

Here is a pic of it. I took the piece of rock I thought he was in out of the water and he came climbing out of a hole. What should I do? he inked in the bowl I put him in but I immediately changed the water. Please help if there is any hope for this guy...

Not sure what species it is, but it looks nocturnal. Also, without knowing the species it is tough to say whether a 20 gallon will be big enough for him, maybe someone here can identify it. If you do not already have a skimmer on this tank i reccomend getting one. They are incredibly messy eaters and as you have experienced can ink. This ink can be toxic to them in high enough concentrations, so its good you did a water change. What i reccomend that you do is check out this site www.tonmo.com it will give you everything you need to know about octo care. HTH

Good luck

I found out that it is a pygmy octopus. He won't get much bigger than a golfball. He is definitely nocturnal...

I have it in a critter box above my sump. Anyone have any ideas on filtration as this is my biggest problem.

Fom the pics I have seen in the TBS forum the species is probably O.mercators. If it is a redish maroon color with a pointy mantle and white specks or spots my guess is a merc.

I believe it to be the O.mercators as well...Its been almost 3 mos and he's still kickin...even eating out of my hand.

BTW, He is still eating pods...What else will this thing eat?
