Found out why my fish are dying!

I wrote last week asking for any ideas as to why my fish were dying despite decent test results, etc. You were all very nice in offering suggestions and I appreciate your help. Yesterday my son brought over a voltage meter and his "could it be..." turned out to be the answer. The powerhead I was running, despite being brand new and well rated, was leaking 3.5 volts of electricity. Hopefully the replacement of the powerhead, along with incorporating some of the suggestions offered, will send me on a much happier experience with salt water.

but ya know... you never answered our questions on that thread: what really IS your specific gravity? haha :D we have answers ranging from a slurry of salt, to not enough salt...

Yep, it's time to end the question of the century. My sg was 1.022 at the time of the original post. Having read a number of suggestions, it has not been raised to 1.024. Hopefully no one lost any sleep over this.

just wondering... I keep mine low, around the same as yours... just wanted to know what it REALLY was :D

I usually keep me up around 1.025 or 1.026

In the future, please update the original thread when you get results like this. I'm sure many of the posters in that thread have not seen this one.

TBS, hopefully you have found the problem and everything will go great from now on. Good luck! :D

Also, I would recommend adding a GFI and a ground probe to the system. The GFI would likely have tripped and alerted you to the leaking powerhead. They can also save your life.

Thanks for the advice about the GFI - I'll see to that right away. I have them everywhere else where water is near - never thought about this 55 gallons of it though - Duh!!!
