Found this at the beach today

Chinooks and coho (Pacific species) are raised and released at the Salmon River fish hatchery, right here in NY state.

I was there this summer. Many, if not most of the stocked fish return to the hatchery in the fall where they're milked of eggs and milt to produce the next "batch" of stocked fish.

As a chef, I know that Coho season is over and we are entering the beginning of King Salmon season. So...that very well could have been a left over Coho that didn't make it or a King that ran out of energy. Either way, I like Big Eye Tuna better anyway!

Nice Mike!

Scott, about 15 yrs ago, I was able to get an easy gym credit in college by doing a weekend fishing trip in Pulaski on the Salmon River...that hatchery there is amazing!

I visited that Salmon River hatchery in the summer of 2009 and it's incredible.
Here's a King I caught last month in Lake Ontario just off Oswego.

we get a mix of salmon here in rochester : kings, coho, and atlantic. saw all three last week in a small tributary stream. the runs are not set in stone. they are similar to the leaves changing color in the fall. some change early ,some run late. the vast majority are kings.

yup that a dead female King salmon..looks like it died before spawning from the color and the huge belly filled with eggs :)
