Fowleri / Fowlers Tang help...opinion

Hello all,

I bought a Fowleri Tang from my local reef store. beautiful and doing really well. never saw one before. kind of rare from what i understand. i was looking for a kole tang but they didn't have any. this Fowlers Tang is blue with orange and yellow fin. i have a 75 gallon mainly rock, tank. they said it would be fine. now after research i see that isn't the case. looks like anywhere from 200 gallon - 300 gallon required. after a month, i called them yesterday. they offered to give me 50% store credit for him. i can't bring myself to return him but i think it may be best? the largest i would go to is a 125 gallon in a year....would this be ok? I am set to bring him in today but having second thoughts. thanks. Steve

A 125g may work in the short term providing minimal rock work and no other tank mates. If you do tankmates makes sure they are small and not competing for algae with the tang

I would return him. If you aren't getting anything bigger than a 125g tank, you just can't keep him. Shame, they are really neat fish.

thanks so much for the quick replies. I don't have a lot of rock work, just enough for cool hiding places. not many corals at all. I hate being in this situation. I'm so 50/50 on this and just not sure. If I did keep him, and went with the 125, it would be him, my yellow tang and a pair of clowns. The yellow tang follows him all over...they're a good pair and fun to watch. dammit!

ok, thanks again to everyone! i appreciate your time and knowledge. i'm off to the reef store now. they said they will give me a 50% store credit. i'm going to try to get a bit more. i should have researched first i know but they said a 75 will be fine. they had no idea.i hope he goes to a good home and that they don't screw up again.

I have a 5" one in my 11' 325g. He fits fine...no way in a 125. These get big. Mine will outgrow my tank in a couple yrs for sure. I love them and they are great, beautiful fairly peaceful acanthurus and best of all they are stress cases like a lot of others from that genus.
