Saltwater226 I can't wait to see your awesome setup. I hope to have my calcium reactor online before the meeting so I will come with questions in case I can't figure out the darn Aquarium Plants CarbonDoser. :)

Ive been wanting to visit his place for some long, now I definatly have no reason why not to go his way lol.

Is anyone welcome at the meeting and what's the rules on bringing frags? I'm a TBRC member and on the board. This meeting is about an hour plus from me but I'm thinking about making the drive.

Roger

You would have fun roger. Its worth the drive. It would be nice to have some new inventory as well.

"To be able to bring frags to the frag event you need to be an current ORCA member,
only ORCA members are allowed to bring corals." From the website. Membership for an individual is $20 for a year. You can join the club online at O-R-C-A.com or sign up at the meeting.

It would be great to have you join up!

What are the selling rules?
How many corals can I bring?
Any limits on how many of each I can bring?

How many people normally go to the meetings?

Roger it would be great it you made the trip. I have heard great stuff about your tank and corals.

I'm flattered thx. I'm interested in going for sure

What's deadline for submitting pictures?

What's deadline to become a member and still sell corals?

How many people normally go to the meetings?

Ok I registered. I still don't c the answer to my questions above though.

Thx

Roger

I wasn't able to find any "rules" with respect to the frag auction however I was told in the past that I could bring 50 frags which I believe we came pretty darn close. :) There is no limit for duplicate corals but 50 frags of green birds nest probably wouldn't be very desirable. :)

I don't see any explicit answer to the deadline question but since the meeting is on Saturday night I would think you would have to be a member by Wednesday or so to give the board enough time to get the membership in place so you can submit corals online (NLT than Saturday morning of auction date). This isn't a rule but I thinking that should be enough time to get all paperwork in place.

I am definitely looking forward to seeing what corals you will be bringing. The sooner you can get corals submitted the more time people will have to generate interest. We usually have around 30+ people for frag events. If there are interesting corals submitted more people show up.

I know you haven't asked but the auctions are no reserve and the money is split 50/50 between you and ORCA.

Wow 50/50 split. Thats enough to turn me away. i think I will think about it but thats alot. We do %75seller %25 to club. I will think about it but shoot thats disapointing. I may still come to scope out the club. But by the time i take all the individual pictures and then submit them all. i mine as well just go to work to make the money and keep my corals :)

I certainly agree 50/50 split is rough. In the end though, for me I just like to move some coral out and make room for new coral. If you want to check out the club then submit a smaller qty of coral, maybe enough to pay your gas to come over. That way you have a free evenings to talk reef and meet some new people. Generate some coral sales that way and keep 100%.

If you come over early enough you can check out the LFS in town or better yet come see some of our member tanks.

50/50 split is high but it helps out the club also.

Ok I'll bit. What does ORCA do with the money that TBRC is not offering because they don't have the funds? It's a non profit still correct? It's text so I hope that I'm not coming across rude as that is not my intention at all.

Roger

I know that the club provides $ for the host home to provide food and drinks for the event. The club also throws a great Christmas party. Other than that I dont have details.

The frag swaps are a good time, fun chance for new folks to get there hands on nice stuff for a good price and a chance for some of us to clear off our frag racks. Although frags are bought and sold its not a money driven event.

Xenia and mushrooms will sometimes sell for $15 and acros will go for $5. Its always fun to see how it goes.

If they offered a better split they would have more corals put in the auction which would result in the same or more net funds for the club. Some people are bad at math though

I don't really know the process for discussing this in a meeting or going to the board with the idea of changing the split. I wouldn't be opposed but I honestly don't think it would change how people react. Making a blanket statement about someone's skills at math though doesn't make a whole lot of sense nor would it offer any sort of help to change the situation. The club used to have frag events that lasted well into the night with hundreds of frags and there was no resounding complaint on the split. The frag events are now much smaller and the quality and diversity of corals being offered for sale in the event is also much lower.

It would be great to see someone like Roger make the trip over and sell a few of his corals to give the club a "test run" per se and see how he does. I am sure he will have a good time and will make a few dollars in the process. No, it will not be the same as having people to the house selling his corals but then again, he won't be having people come to his house (there is value in not having to go through this process).

In the past I have taken home over $200 in a night. I could sweat the fact that if I had done that at my house it would have been $400+ but then again, I would have had to deal with 40 people coming through door, answering a million of the same questions, handling all the money, etc. This way I was able to spend the evening with fellow reefers in a nice setting, have some food and fellowship, opportunity to buy coral I didn't already have and go home with no clean up. To top it off, I made a donation to the club of over $200 so that they can put that money towards future events like bringing speakers (Albert Thiel and Mr Saltwater Tank TV guy), renting a bus to take on a trip, buy items for raffle, etc.

Roger hit the nail on the head. What is ORCA doing for their members with the extra 25% that Tampa isn't doing with their 25%. I've been to both meetings and we all know the answer.

I've spoken to multiple people lately about selling frags at various places and they all replied the same way about selling at ORCA frag auctions and the 50% charged. Charge 25% and you'll increase the participation, therefore likely resulting in more money "donated" to the club.

Im sure u would make just as much money as a club and have a beter mix of corals. I can still bring corals but i cant bring the high end stuff and loss 50%. I sold about $400 worth of coral last month at r meeting. At 25% im sure i would have done the same at your meeting if the lercentage made more sense but for me i dont see it beingbworth it at a split. Just my feelings. And u loss my $20 cause i dont feel its worth joining if its not worth selling. Currently i am a member of 3 reef clubs so i do get around. I dont know of another one thats 50%. The highest im a part of is 30%
