Frag Deal vs. Drug Deal

I know it often goes around the club and hobby that being a reef keeper is similar to being a druggie. Well, if that's the case, then I just got busted as a dealer...

Tennsquire and I were meeting in a parking lot at Vanderbilt to trade-off some frags and up walks two Vanderbilt cops. One of them says something to the effect of, "I see all of these bags you guys are handing off and I have to ask you what you're doing."

We explain what is in the bags, what we're up to, and I flash the official MTRC reef club card, which sufficed to convince them that we weren't doing anything illegal...

That just brought the druggie analogy full circle.

LOL.

C_stowers got me hooked on SPS. He told me one day "Your tank looks kind of empty -- what you need are some corals. I'll give you some" and he gave me a few coral frags. Then a couple of months later he said "Yeah, those are looking pretty healthy, but they are common corals that aren't very good looking. I've got some more exotic corals that I can sell you!"

So he hooked me with the freebie and then started selling

It's a good thing that you weren't passing around syringes for aiptasia.

HaHa, I was tryin' to be so smooth about it at the AC meet...lol

....good thing you were doing it in a vanderbuilt parkinglot!!!.....and not a back alley somewhere...lol....it's a little chilly out, did you have a hoodie on?...maybe that looked suspicios...LOL

Brian told me this and my first response was "Good thing you weren't giving him some two part to try, or selling him salt!" There are enough mysterious white powders in this hobby to land all of us in jail without even touching on illegally obtained corals... I'm still waiting to have a cop knock on the door and want to investigate the blue glow coming out of our windows at night!

yea really, when you open a box of the salt that has 4 blank bags full of "white stuff". Especially the dow flake. That guy had the zip lock bags at the frag swap I thought man if someone gets pulled over on the way home how are they gonna get out of that. Makes me think of the time I took my brother some catnip in a ziplock bag for his cats. That's just askin' for trouble there.

That's great. I immediately thought of two part or something along those lines. Several pounds of a white powdery substance might draw attention. Did you get nervous, too, like you were actually doing something wrong (just because you were being questioned)?

We were in our house in Nashville for less than two days when we were accused of 'growing grass in the living room' by the home owners assoc pres (major ***...). We hadn't had a chance to put up curtains in the two days we had been there, so the lights were shining out of the windows. He wanted me to give up my tanks so he didn't have to deal with looking at the blue cast outside the windows. I told him the yellow cast coming out of everyone else's windows made me think of malaise and jaundice, maybe they should consider a change... I noticed a cop sitting outside my house here in Montgomery shortly after moving in, too. He was apparently satisfied with the street side view. Not only lights, baggies, chemicals, but also electric bills. With $450 monthly electric bills, I bet I'm on a few watch lists:D.

Think about all the things in this hobby that can be taken so many different ways.
I've heard that some in this hobby likes to "cook rock".

I was just about ready to run. Good thing the cops didn't see the Grateful Dead sticker on my car......

(wondering if trading baggies of coral constitutes "probable cause" or "reasonable suspicion"...)
