Yeah I'd be interested, considering I don't have any frags to trade I'll venture a guess that I should bring some cash :-) .... does anyone know if Pulsing Xenia is hard to keep for a beginner? my cousin had it years ago and I thought it was awesome.

You are not being rude....If you are on this forum and are interested in this insanity we call a hobby, then you certainly welcome to attend.

One of the first frags that I ever added to my tank was Pulsing Xenia and it soon took over most of the rockwork in my system. Some people have difficulties and for some it grows like weeds. I have seen it live for years and then all of a sudden quickly die off. Most of mine disappeared after my old Clown Trigger decided it was something to eat.

The big Derasa clam decided to muscle over some rock today and toppled over half my rock in the 55. There are a bunch of frags from the ordeal (nana, setosa) that will be looking for new homes. I can frag just about everything in my systems if somebody is looking for something in particular. The 55 is getting overgrown and I can barely get a hand in there to clean the glass.

Thanks for the invite, I ordered RED SEA CORAL PRO SALT MIX since it was recommended, and is arriving tomorow and my sand and rocks are coming within the next two days, or so the shipper estimated. I am hoping everything will be cycled by the get together since I am looking foward to having something in the tank :-) I was told that I could throw in a dead schrimp to get the tank cycling what do you think?

I have a Xenia that is pretty much staying put and behaving itself and I love it. It's my favorite coral. I probably won't have any frags either unless the star polyp hop onto the rubble I strategically placed by it. I was going to bring s'more brownies. :clown:

The first bit of advice that I give to newcomers to the hobby is to be patient when starting up your system. Time and time again I have seen people jump in and try to get everything that they can in the system right away. What usually happens is we get in a hurry and the livestock usually suffers because we introduce them to a system that hasn't finished cycling. I personally wouldn't throw anything dead in there but always try to get ahold of some damsels (hardy and inexpensive) and let them do their thing. Please do plenty of research on this site to get more than one perspective. Subscribe to the Upper Reef group as well as the groups in Rochester and Buffalo have a ton of experience and success.

If you want to visit and talk with some awesome folks then definately show up for the meet. No question should be left unasked......

damn after reading these posts im getting depressed i wont get to attend the meet! oh well there will be more to come dave your awesome and we all appreciate your hospitality!!

The problem with damsels (or any fish) is that they are impossible to get out without tearing the tank apart. I wouldnt get any fish with the plan to get rid of it later. Let it cycle for a while, and then add some clownfish or something you plan to keep. If anything, I think 26 has some saltwater acclimater guppies or mollies or whatever freshwater fish can be acclimated.

I always just added blue legged hermits and a pound a gallon of LR , some have said to add a dead, uncooked cocktail shrimp for a bump.

Xenia's are my bane i had to go out of my way to kill them they seem to grow anywhere even if you cover them in sand :)

My Xenia was the first coral I had and it's one of my favorites. It has been sticking to the rock it is on and growing but not spreading at a breakneck speed.

I'm planning on coming, although that's always subject to change. I might be a bit late though, my son has a birthday party to go to in Endwell at 1:00pm. If I drop him off first, I should be there by 1:30 at the latest. Is there anything I can bring? Do you need anything at all?

Dave Pirc,

Thanks so much for the very informative visit and for your generosity. We learned a lot just by observing you handle the corals, talking with you about your set up and so forth. We very much appreciate all the goodies we left with and they are now happily (we hope) adjusting to their new home. It was also nice to put a face to some of the others that post here and it was great to meet everybody. Thanks again! :bounce3:

There was nothing in the Coral dips BTW, no bugs that we could see.

Ok, it has been just over a week now. How are the new frags doing in everyones tanks. Mine are doing very well. The mushroom I got from Mike is @ 1.5" in diameter now, and I have 2 open heads on each frag I got from him as well. The one I got from Dave are also doing well. 1 has I believe 6 open heads, while the other has 11 open heads (maybe more, but the hermit crab is on it right now). Anyone else?

Dan

Mine are doing great if the sofites would just stay put it would be even better. I used the superglue gel but after a few days the frags fall off. Luckily they end up in the same place so I can find them. I posted a question about this to the forum and someone gave me the idea to sandwich a good reef glue that you use out of the water between two "slices" of superglue gel so I will try that next. I have a lot of current and so I started to wedge the things into any nooks and crannies that I could fine and that has helped. They are very hardy to put up with me pawing them the way I do. Otherwise they look awesome!
