Frag Grow Out #1

kirstenk

23.5 Degrees
Here is how it works.

I have 5 yellow tubinaria frags. All appx equal size and color. We are going to put them in 5 different tanks and see how they do. Check growth, color and things like that. :)

To qualify for the Grow Out you need:

1. To be a participating member of this forum.
2. Have a camera to post progress.
3. Post said progress on a monthly basis.

Who is game? :D

Hey Mike......you qualify and I will put cha down. Kristin too.

We will also be having an Acro one in the future.

Alright, we have our 5. I'll take some pics of them and then I will bring the corals to the Auction for ya'll to pick up.

John...........Tiffanie and I have been talking about doing this for awhile. She supplied the plugs and I supplied the coral.

Ed.....there were no system requirements this go around as I think the coral can survive in many different types of lighting. It will be the differences in the systems that will effect the turnout.

Why don't ya'll post your specs here (lighting and how long), appx flow (turnover)....anything you do that you think effects your corals. Then I will transfer the info into the thread where we will monitor the corals.

Cody, the acro grow out will have many more frags available. :)

Betting pool... What makes this interesting is that some of these people are going to get much better color (maybe not so much on this one but for sure on the Acro one) while others growth will excel. The shape of corals will also come into play because of flow. Should be fun.

My tank:

180 gallon with a 55 gallon sump and 30 gallon refugeum. It's been up for a little over a year and is the combination of my old 55 and Ed's 120.
The sand depth is between a SSB and DSB. It's ~6" in some places, and less than 1" in other places. I'm guessing there's ~150 pounds of live rock.

Lights:
Three 250w 14k Hamilton Metal Halide. One bulb runs from 9:30am to 8:30pm. The other two run from 10am to 8:00pm.

Two 110w super actinic VHO. They run from 8:00am to 9:30pm.

Pumps:
Return: Mag 9.5
CL: Little Giant 4-MDSC-QX
Two Seio 620
One Seio 1100
One Rio 600
One Maxi jet 1200

I use a calcium reactor and maintain my alk at 9.6. I don't monitor my calcium, but if the alk is right I count on the calcium being inline.

Ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates have always read 0.

I do water changes irregularly. Sometimes it's every week, but most times it's about once per month. Sometimes I go a couple months. Each water change is 25 gallons.

My fuge has live rock, chaeto, caulerpa, and is lit by T-5s.

My salt is Tropic Marin Pro. SG is 1.025.

My ACJR controller and chiller keep my temp between 80.5 and 81.

Skimmer is Euro-Reef CS8-2

I think that's all that's relevant?

**Edit- pH ranges from 7.9-8.4. I don't dose kalk and don't use additives.

BTW, this is a great idea. I've often wondered how multiple frags of the same colony do in different conditions, and to document it like you propose is great. The closest that I've come is my nana. Most of it is on the overflow, but I have a frag down on the rocks. Even though the two are only less than 12" apart, the difference is huge, in color and growth.

This will be great! Thanks Kirsten and Tiff for putting this together.

I seem to be all set to come up this weekend. I have the "OK", I have permission to use my wife's car (my truck isn't equipped with AC) and I'll have some frags for the auction.

I am glad to see this is starting! If you don't post progress or you try to sell your grow out coral, I will hunt you down and confiscate your best frags!! lol

I have a yellow/green/peach-like birdsnest that needs major trimming that would be a good grow out coral for beginner SPS keepers. It varies pretty widely with light/flow. I will try to have that available for the July FRAG meet.

I think this is so cool, I will even make a little web page for it. :D

yea totally! this is really interesting. !!! Maby if you have a webpage (if you want a free one go to yahoo geocities) have the people pick up the frag on the same day then have them all take pics on the same interval. ie. one week month, etc.
