Fragging a non branching hammer?

I've got a non branching hammer which is getting rather large (polyps extend at least 3" past the skeletal structure)

I'm just curious if it's plausible to frag these, or how they work in nature. Do the polyps just grow endlessly? Does the skeletal structure grow and expand over long periods of time?

I think this is a pretty standard purple w/ green tip non branching hammer coral
