Hey there,

Got all the parameters right in the tank and looking to finally start growing some coral. What's some good starting frags/coral for a 90gal? Just keep in mind I'm on a college budget ;). Should I add anything except calcium, alk, and magnesium? Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

Hey Bud,
I am also a college kid so I can help you out there. Start with some basic mushrroms and zoos. Don't go too crazy and buy stuff like frogspawn and things that are too expensive.
A lot of time and money has been wasted by myself and others trying to get the best looking coral right off the bat. Start slow and make sure you know what you are doing then add gradually. Craigslist is good to get some easy corals for fairly cheap.
also join a club in your area. they should be able to hook you up with a few starter pieces. Where are you located?
If you are in San Jose area let me know and I can give you a few frags to start you. Remember it is all about karma and helping each other out.
hope this helps
Cheers

what lighting do you have?

what types of corals do you want to keep?

i wouldn't start adding Ca/Alk and Mg unless you need it. do you have test kits for these?

pierce - Thanks for the advice. I live in Orlando, I do believe there is a local reefing orgination called ORCA, maybe they can help. Appreciate the offer for the frags!

mbbuna - I have a Current PC with 2 65 Watt and 2 Act. Descent amount of flow coming with a Mag 7 and 2 HK 3's in the tank. I only have the mag 7 coming up to one of those black twisty outputs, would it be worth it to get a splitter or one that has two black twisty outputs because it's moving sand and putting out a lot of power in just one stream? (no idea what black twisty things are called) I think I'm looking to grow some zoo (those are the button looking things correct?) and I like hammer corals as well, and i guess rics wouldn't be bad to start off with either. I also have a low flow area I would like to add a BTA to for my big maroon clown (he's outgrown his small anenome). I add the calc/alk with major/minor nutrients because I have a toadstool and anenome (no idea if they need it).

Sounds great. post some pics and people here will definetely be able to help you along with tips and ideas.
Hammers are hard to start with so good luck and watch for signs of stress and decay!!!
Cheers

pc's wont support a bta long term...start small wish zoos and shrooms and work your way into leathers and so on...btw gsp and xenia is good for a starter too

mushrooms are the best starter coral IMO. They are hardy and reproduce on their own or with assistance.

I will be parting out my 120 Gallon tank shortly. If you are interested I have well over 50 mushrooms or varied colors and sizes.

I've thought about some pulsating xenias for the tank. That's a shame about the BTA, I was really hoping to start one. Could I buy a frag pack of some shrooms, zoas, xenias, rics and be fine? How much is too much at one time? I'll post some pics later if that would help people out. Where should I place different corals for best growth (flow and light req.s)?

Why don't you just add them in slow. Dont rush into things...your working with living things.. Just because they don't die dosen't mean they arn't suffering.

I know how you feel you just want your tank to be beautiful and add everything in right away but you have to be patient. Everyone has to start somewhere :)

Alti is local to me. He's a great source of information and he really bends over backwards for his customers. A great guy to shop from and keep in contact with for questions. He has literally thousands of frags in stock, so don't be let down by what's listed on the site. I can't say enough good things about his operation.

Green or Yellow Star Polyps, Mushrooms, Anthellia, Zoanthids, all would do fine. Once the tank is more 'mature' you could step up to some LPS like Caulastrea, Euphyllias, Brains, etc. Montipora digitata are a good coral too. Even though they're an SPS they are easy to keep and they're a good nitrate alarm. If your Nitrates rise, they Monti will close up and signal to you that something is wrong. That's good for those of us that don't test daily.
