Frags in duluth for sale?

Hey,

I recently joined this forum because realized there were many reefers living in Duluth which is very close to me, I live in Cloquet. I was wondering if anyone would be willing to sell frags to me. I currently own a coral-less tank and am trying to find some quality frags from reefers around here before I resort to the internet and LFS. World of fish has some pretty pricy corals and shipping prices have deterred me from online purchases (I’m only in 9th grade so I don't have much cash)...at least until I know coral will thrive in my tank.

I’m looking for LPS, zoas, shrooms, and ricordias. However it’s not limited to that.

Hi Ben I took a look at your nano post and looks like you need to get control of your algae issue first or it will overwelm any corals you add. What kind of water are you using for topoff and water changes? We have a small club in Duluth and I'm sure we can come up with some corals for you.

Hey,
Thanks for the fast response. I beleive its only a matter of time till my algae clears up, but till then I guess I will just have to wait. I will let everyone know when I have cleared it all up. It shouldn't take long. My water parameters being all in check (Nitrate, Nitrite, Ammonia, Alk, pH, and Calcium that is...) plus the clean up crew and my manual removal/water changes (with RO water) should really speed up the process. The algae gained a foothold when I first started this tank and I neglected it for a few months, but Im finally puting some time into it and things have been going well.

And once again what LFS are reccomened in duluth?

Hey Ben

I hate to say it but we don't really have a great selection at the LFS about the best is WOF. The Twin Cities has far better LFS but I realize it's a long way off for you. I have green star polyps, mushrooms, colt coral , xenia, kenya tree and I'm sure other club members would kick in with other items when your ready. I will let you know when we are having our next meeting and maybe you can attend, we usually hold them on a Saturday afternoon.

Ben I noticed a few things about your tank from your pictures and posts. One is a lack of coralline algae growth for a tank that has been up for ten months. The other thing is your alk is very low and your calcium is very high which would account for no coralline growth and high algae levels. Unless you are using good test kits, Salifert being the easiest to use and read, I wouldn't 100% rely on your test results for cal and alk anyway. Don't think I'm putting down your results just offering some insight from experience.

Another reason for this is because within those 10 months I guess you could say I ignored my tank.... My tank became rampant with cyano and algae which after a few attempts to remove I started to just ignore it. The cyano smothered my rocks and I just recently (about 5 weeks?) removed it all with the aid of chemipure. The cyano left a stringy texture on the rocks as well and that hasn't been removed until recently.

I’m hoping that with the rocks clear of all that crud (The cyano/stringy stuff and the algae) it will start to re-grow much of the coralline that was lost as well as fill in new spots. So I guess you could look at this as my tank is only about a month and 1/2 old.

As for my test kits the calcium and alkalinity tests are difficult to read because they give somewhat unclear instructions. So I will not rely too much on the tests as you recommended.

Do you still think that after hearing this that my coralline will continue to not grow? What could I do to fix this?

We don't want to tweek your system without good test kits and Seliferts are not available locally. What brand of salt are you using? Do you do water changes and if so how often? What is the salinity of your tank water?

I'm using instant ocean, but I have heard some not so great things about it. So, I will be switching to reef-crystals or redsea once the salt I have is gone...or mostly gone.

I do water changes once a week. Usually I change about 2 gallons.

Ben salinity sounds good and so does water changes. I would go to Reef Crystals it is the salt most of us use around here. Best price is to order from Foster & Smith a 160 pail is $35 and shipping which is cheaper than any LFS. One note which tells me your Calcium reading is off unless you adding suppliments is Instant Ocean comes in with a calicum reading of 340 -360.

I can definatly see this being true because my Calcium test kit is difficult to read. It states in the directions to keep adding drops untill pure blue...what exactly is pure blue?

As for salt I will order the ReedCrystals from Foster and Smith,

Try running a test and stopping when you get a change to blue even if it's lite blue and see if the reading is in the 340 to 360 range. Reef Crystals should test in the 400-420 range try testing some when you get it. You can also test the IO when you mix some and see if you get a 340-360 test result.

I agree with Jim. I would not add anything to you tank till you have all your algae problems taken care of. I redid my tank and the algae took off after that and it is a lot easier to work on you tnak when you do not have to be concernied about your corals.

There are a lot of us here who have corals that would be willing to donate them once you get your tank under control.

Well...my algae is still here. Not as bad as before but still...so I’m converting my AC 70 into a fuge. I also added a MJ 600, which should be very beneficial for eliminating the algae and for keeping the coral more healthy...when I get them.

So my question is, anyone willing to sell me some Chaetomorpha?
