Frags turned brown after introduction to tank, no polyp extension

I will change out my gfo and carbon this weekend. I have a hanna phosphate meter that I haven't took out of the packaging yet, I'll try to get a reading off of it. I'll also trim my chaeto out. Good tip on the ro, I need to check that too.
Thanks dude

You better do. I'd been for awhile fooled by Salifert test kit on my PO4 value. After had stopped replacing the exhausted GFO for more than 2months my SPS browning. It always showed very low even near undetechable color in the vial even the expiry end in Dec 2012. But when things get browning I asked a friend to check thru hanna photometer and it registered 0.1!!!
Now after running about 5 days color have picking up at the tips. JHME lately.

Alright I just tried out my hanna checker for the first time. I ran the test multiple times, with multiple samples, and I'm getting between .03 and .07 for my phosphates. I also re-ran my nitrate test with a different test kit still getting 0. Then I also ran ammonia to rule out anything in the ammonia/nitrite/nitrate chain and I got zero on that too.

I also gave some chaeto away this week and when I started pulling it apart I did notice some whitish, pale sections deep in the middle of the ball.

Is it safe to rule out excess nutrients causing the problem?

So I changed out my GFO, GAC, and ripped out some more chaeto. The frags that did not brown immediately are now becoming more brown. =(

OK I wanted to post an update on my situation. I have got my dosing schedule down with some dosing pumps and these were my params as of tonight

nitrate 0
phosphate 0
cal 400
dkh 8
mag 1300+

This is a picture of what the frag looked like when I bought it

And this is what the frag looks like after two weeks in my tank

In the beginning I thought my problem was using coral revive... this stuff browned my corals out instantly. Then I bought another few pieces at a swap, and they didn't brown instantly but faded to look like this.... what gives?

Coral revive is iodine based. Iodine in high dosages browns corals. Use CoralRx instead and you won't have the browning issue.

I am having similar issues in my tank right now. I have a refractometer that you could use (maybe I can borrow the hanna photometer as well)? ..couldn't hurt to slowly rule out things..

Eric I have two refractometers and a hydrometer. They are calibrated with calibration fluid so I think its safe to rule out salinity. You are welcome to bring over a water sample to check your ohosphates but since you live in Li it might be easier if you come to harrys meet this weekend he has a better phosohate meter than I do

As I stated, my first group of frags browned due to revive. However I bought another group of frags that i dopped with coral rx instead that did not immediately brown, but have browned gradually over the past two weeks

i never had a coral brown out that was a tank raised coral after dipping in revive. was this coral tank raised for along time?

also does the previous owner use any form of supplements like zeo or aminos or anything? The original color looks like the coral was given steroids or in a zeo system.

The symptoms I'm having are the same for all my frags not just that specific piece.... I only bought a few from this guy. I'll try to get more pictures

Yes they were huge tank raised colonies from a local reefer. Revive either browned or killed a lot of my first sps frags

Are you keeping them low in the tank and slowly moving them up? By the last pics you put up it looks like they are somewhat bleached.

+1
they look almost bleached to me, not browned out. I always start mine low in the tank and slowly raise them, over a month or two.

Guys, I took more pics for ya
