Frank's 120ish SPS Tank

I never noticed an alk checker issue. What happened? I know the calcium one sucks - it's terrible. The alk and PO4 ones are really awesome though. The alk fluid if it gets old will wander in accuracy, but that's the same for any type of titration test. Recently Hanna recalled a whole whack of alk reagents, but i have 2 of the recalled ones and they test exactly the same as the replacement one, so I just carry on using them. Since alk is so important though, I always double test - once with Hanna and once with Salifert. Salifert is consistently 0.2 dKH higher than the Hanna.

That's what I was talking about. The recall and issues with the reagent. I'll look into it.

I got my refund from DD. Looks like I'm ordering from LA now since DD doesn't have anymore listed.

I saw barletts today at exotic aquatic. There were two. Not bad. Eating well. Ended up passing on them.

I used my credit with LA to order 5 more resplendents. Let's try this one more time. I'll be home for their arrival.

So, it's been awhile. Not much to report. I've changed all my bulbs and I'm running AB Special x2 and one B Plus. I'm sure how I feel about the color. I'd like a little more crisp white. Growth has been steady but I still feel like I need more light.

I upped my T5s to a total of 8hours a day now. I think I'm starting to get into territory that means I should replace my lights. They're running from 1-9p now. LEDs are on from 10:30-10:30. 100% for about 10 hours.

My Cyano is a little bad and I've moved my power heads around some to increase circulation. I know that I'm feeding a lot but I'm not getting an increase in nutrients, in fact, the opposite is happening. I'm sure some of my nutrients are getting sucked up by the cyano but even then cyano is growing in areas that I would consider high flow. So I believe I'm just experience some new tank syndrome.

I had a very bad run at Anthias. I'm going to give it one more shot. I believe my issues are related to my QT methods and not do to the health of the fish -- which makes me feel pretty crappy. I've done a lot more research on QT methods and I feel like I'm more prepared now but after this next order, if it doesn't work, I'll be ordering easier fish to keep and try the anthias further down the road.

Mini Update:
I ended up finding the Tierra Anthias that I wanted through Reef Addiction. I'd highly recommend them to anyone. Nice store. Helpful and friendly staff. Lance and Chris are who I dealt with. They ordered the fish from the west coast, probably Quality marine. They ended up having one loss and one with a bladder issue. I wasn't required to purchase them.

I ended up with Four Tierras. One male and three females. I lost one female on the first night but she wasn't looking good from introduction into my QT. I, also, picked up a Leopard wrasse female there.

I have all four fish in QT now for 6 days. All are eating well. Sunday, I ran my first dose of PraziPro. 3/4 tsp in about 15 gallons. Everyone handled it well and ate like pigs through the treatment. I'm going to QT for 21 days unless an issue comes up. I thought about doing TTM.

One thing that I did run into was that my Instant Ocean was mixing up with .5-1ppm of ammonia. I didn't notice this until this round and upon research I found this to be normal. I'm not doing 5gallon water changes on my display every other day and using the water from the Display in my QT. Hopefully, someone else reads this and learns from my rookie mistake as I probably lost fish prior based on this.

My QT is being fed about 5-6 times per day with only small amounts of frozen mysis, cyclo, and brine. The fish go crazy over all of them. The anthias really create a frenzy. As I only feed enough to be eaten in about 10-15 seconds to avoid excess. Yesterday, my Leopard mel. female became more aggressive in her feeding and is now actively CHASING particles around the tank.

On to the display...
I've had a major outbreak of cyano. It's hideous. I'm not doing anything major to combat it. I decided to just let it run its course. However, the 5 gallon water changes seem to be helping it to subside. It could also be a coincidence. Nitrates are about 0ppm and I picked up a Hanna low phos checker and it read .0415 on Wednesday.

Nothing else to report here. I haven't taken photos because of the cyano.

Good luck with he cyano, Frank!
I hope you get it under control. It's such a pita..
If you get a good shot of your new anthias, post that.
Your last round of frag shots looked really good. Nice pe, beginnings of encrusting.
Hope they are all still doing well.

I agree it makes sense to see if it just burns itself out due to your tank still being fairly new. The one thing I've noticed is that you have the "backwards"
nutrients thing going on. In your previous posts you have the normal N03 higher than P04.

Whenever it's like that corals and other bacteria may slow down and give that cyano a chance to jump in. I don't think there's a specific number I would target other than to get that reversed...........the ballpark number I use is at least 10 to 1.

From my own experiences, whenever I've had that backwards scenario I got all the weird cyano thick mats, green cyano, purple cyano, ect.

If you keep a journal go back and track any changes you made that may have caused this.

For example, have you discontinued the Biogest?

I did stop dosing the biodigest but this was as of the 30th of last month. The cyano was present well before that. I was also not dosing the bioptim carbon source. So, I'm not sure of how productive the biodigest was aside from having massive amounts of nutrients to feed on from my heavy feedings. I did take my phosphate reactor offline probably about 30 days ago but it hadn't been changed in awhile. Reason for this was is that I'm using the pump for it in my QT tank. I have also stopped dosing the Seachem fuel as of about 2 weeks ago at most.

Now, I do have 2L of siporax in my sump. The second liter was added maybe 2 months ago. So, I'm pretty sure this is what is responsible for the super low nitrates since the second liter should be kicking in about now.

You're not the first person to tell me about the backwards nutrients potentially becoming a problem. Rovvster told me the same thing a little while ago and suggested that I dose nitrate to the tank. However, I'm wondering if it would be even feasibly possible to raise my nitrates with the amount of siporax I have in my sump or if it would be a better idea to control phosphates. My corals have amazing coloration and growth has been decent for me with the higher nutrients.

I'll be posting a photo update this weekend.

Good luck with he cyano, Frank!

Thanks, reefmutt. The cyano has been a pain but I know that some of it is related to my tank maturing. I'll try and post some good photos of my QT'd fish this weekend. I'm in love with them. They're awesome. Everything is doing well and just about everything in the tank has encrusted much more and/or thrown out new decent sized buds.

I was using the biogest as an example but I did read it can reduce cyano in the product write up, but that may not mean much.

If the corals look great I'd be less inclined to do anything for now as you mentioned.

Those are some beautiful fish!
When do they go in?

Thank you. I'm only doing a 21 day QT on these. They're very active and eat like pigs and have shown 0 issues health wise. I did two rounds of prazipro and didn't shake anything off.

Same goes for the leopard wrasse. He's chasing frozen food in the current and is out regularly during tank hours.

Also, I'm running into home construction on the 24th. Windows, doors, and insulation being installed along with a/c being moved indoors.

I don't have a way to stabilize temps from getting very warm in the 15gallons of water in this Miami Heat.

So, unless something pops up between now and Tuesday. I'm making the move.

Also, they're amazing fish. Thank you for the compliments. I'm probably going to try and add another 3 followed by Lori anthias after that.

So, mini update after the photos.

Water changes over the last few weeks have brought my SG from 1.026 to 1.024. Corals seem super happy about the water changes. Alk consumption has increased so I'm now on 4tspn in my ATO instead of 3. It drifted to 7.0 even thought my new water mixes at 7.5 that has been going into the tank. I'll test for phosphate this weekend along with nitrates.

Cruising along. My anthias and wrasse will go into the display on Tuesday night. Construction starts on my home on Wednesday. So, being that the room will be exposed to open air temps with the outside, I don't have a way of managing temp in the qt. Tuesday will mark 21 days. They've gone through two rounds of prazi and are all eating very well.

I've also stopped dosing biodigest and fuel.

Thats it for now.
