Fresh Water Dip??????

I just got a new Rectangle Trigger from my local pet store, He is about 5 inches long, I added him into my 90g tank very slowly, first acclimating him to the temperature and then the water. The process took about an hour, However after a few days i noticed he had ich, day 3 just a few white spots on the fins, and day 4 it was all over the fish, BUT, Day 5 (Today) I noticed there was only a few spots on his fins??? It seems to be going away on its own. I called the store where I got him and they recommended that i do a fresh water dip with the fish. What do you guys think about taking this approach? Thanks for any suggestions. also, it is a relatively new tank and there is no coral in it at the moment.

First you must understand ich in order to defeat it. lots of good reading in the stickies above. FYI freah water dips do nothing for ich.

Sounds like classic ich. Do the research suggested above and get a QT set up. You just cannot have a thriving marine tank without a quarantine tank and doing lots of reading/research. You asked about your LFS advice. They sound like they are clueless. This is probably ich, but could be several other things too. A FW dip does nothing for ich. A pic would really help.

I did the freshwater dip to my tang and just noticed it makes the matter worse due to the extra stress added onto the fish. See my thread for a QT setup.

I fresh water dipped my black nox angel for 5 minutes and with in an hour all the ich fell off and he didn't get it again

If there is no coral in the tank, you could do hypo salinity right in the tank. If you have other fish, they have already been exposed to Ich. Fish stores often keep salinity levels low to save on salt and reduce risk of Ich.

The problem is not the actual Ich falling off but where it got it. No matter how many times you do the freshwater dip, where ever the fish got the Ich is what should be addressed.

If the fish got Ich in the main tank, it will reside in your main tank unfortunately. The tank will most likely have Ich remaining. Fish can have Ich and not show signs right away. It is until the fish gets stressed and their slime coat removes from their skin is when the parasite will show its ugly face aka white spots.

In order to rid Ich for good, one must QT the fish and allow the Ich to die out of the main tank by not having a fish/host to attach to.

+1 researching and reading everything is the best source of knowledge on this subject. As for the freshwater dip, short term answer that only we as humans can see, since it doesn't cure ich on the fish or in the tank. I would do research on here under Tank Transfer Method under the stickys started by Snorvich. This is the only way to cure ich (98.9%) without meds. I would advise a QT without question :reading:

Probably not ich; there are lots of parasites that are often mistaken for ich. The whitespot you see is not the actual parasite, its scar tissue (etc) that are left over from the parasite digging in. The actual ich parasite is buried too deep in the fish to be killed by the zero SG of the FW. FW dips can give some temporary relief to velvet and some other parasites that live & feed on the fish's skin. The whitespot is not living tissue and you have no way of knowing when the actual parasite has left.
