Freshwater Crabs? AKA the funniest thing that happened at PETSMART

so anyway like the title says, are there any negative effects to feeding my peacock red freshwater crabs?

as for the funny part, i bought the crabs with intention of dropping them into my mantis tank and watching the immenient massacre,

so after the PETSMART employee caught them and put them in a little container for me to take home, she gave me a paper to sign, when i asked her what it was for, she told me that it was a sort of contract, and if the crabs didn't do well in the tank, or were not compatible with my current tank members , i had 14 days to return them.

:D well even if you didn't think that's funny, i was trying not to laugh as i signed the paper and went out to the car!

I'm sure he won't die from eating freshwater crabs, but if it's his main diet, it's probably not the healthiest one.

Just like all other marine animals, I assume that a diet consisting of stuff from freshwater lacks stuff marine animals need.

yeah, i kinda figured,

well i guess it's back to shrimp and squid pieces, and crabs when i'm bored

as for the crabs, Ken668 pretty much guessed their status exactly,

i fed an inch wide crab to a 6 inch peacock, so basically the crab was alive in the tank for (i'm not exaggerating) 5 seconds,

next i fed another same sized crab to my 3 inch G. Glabrous, and i heard clicking for about the next hour

Bring in the chucks and the piranha poop and tell them you turned your back for 1 sec. and dont know what happened.

would you believe i went to petco and met an employee that knew what mantis shrimp were? personally i was shocked!

how about i went to petco to buy snails and not only did the guy say he was going to give me his mantis shrimp but they also said that im not welcome back in petco if i want to buy fish or snails every again

because the guy who said he would give me the mantis was talking to to the fish department manager and she asked about why i have been buying so many snails and shrimp and he just told her and she got mad and the next time i came in she said that they will not sell me anymore live animals unless they are feeders

one thing i forgot to mention about my piranha, his mouth is still a bit small, so all he basically does is rip the fish in half (at about the pectoral fin) so i could bring back 20 heads and as for a refund

I would be more worried of the cheap food they feed out . You want to make sure they are gutloaded with good healthy food . You should have told her what you were gonna do to them and see her reaction .

well, i'm not gonna use these guys all the time, i'll feed pieces of shrimp and squid, and the idea for the reaction would be great to get on camera :)

Last time Petco handed me one of those pieces of paper to sign and then told me what it was I pointed out all of the incompatable species housed in the same tanks. The tank full of feeders that were covered in ich. The fact that their information stating that a Red belly Pacu would not grow larger than 12 inches... etc etc...

Long story short, I did not leave with the inverts I was buying because of the tirade on the state of their fish department and employees lack of knowledge instead.

Just boycott petco its far less frustrating.

i dunno about you guys but the petco in my town has some good quality stuff, everything is alive in their tanks and they are always kept clean, the sad thing is that i see worse fish in a different LFS that is a strictly saltwater store
