Is a fridmani or a purple dottyback safe in a topless tank ? Or a black cap purple Bassett ?
Obviously looking for a purple fish for my 57 rimless reef
Thanks

No fish is safe with out a screen on your tank. All fish will jump out at some time. This after keeping fish for 53 years now. [emoji3]

I've had them in open tanks and never any of them jumping out. They normally seek shelter in rocks rather than head for the sky when startled.

If you absolutely are not going to cover the tank, I would go with the basslet, they tend to be cave and rock dwellers and mine never seemed to venture to top area of the tank. The dottybacks are much more jumpy, I saw my orchid get startled are bounce off my screen top.

I have never seen fridmani trying to jump without being chased, and even then it's rare. And I didn't just have one but many over the years in a variety of tanks. I never found them to be jumpy.
As long as you provide enough hiding spaces and refuge they will rather head for those than to the surface.

+1 with ThRoewer dottys are rock inhabitants and would sooner dart for cover than risk a run in the open unless provoked.

I haven't seen my old black cap jump ever. They're usually deeper species fish so...

I think both are equally suited for an open tank.
The black cap will be the calmer fish.
From my experience I would recommend to keep fridmani in pairs as single individuals can be more reclusive.

I wouldn't bother. Mine hid for a week or so. Then only came out to eat (never any other time). Haven't seen it for several weeks - I assume he's dead. Wish I'd gotten a royal gramma instead.
