Friend took care of corals...now RTN

Anyone ever have this happen? Sucks when they grew from small little frags...I told him to keep and eye on alk and im assuming he didn't... guessing alk go to low and caused it.

Anyone else have an issue with low alk causing rtn or should I be looking else where?

yeah fluctuating alk can cause rtn, dont raise it back up too fast either. if they are rtning frag them now or super glue where possible of you could lose the whole colonies

is your friend a reefer....if so, he should have known better.....if not, you should have explained the importance of steady alkalinity in a reef tank...

Alk swings defiantly cause tissue necrosis. It stinks when this happens. I have to say that when you leave your tank in someone else's hands whatever happens ultimately falls back on you. I would look into a Stand alone doser or some dosing pumps on a controller/timer Just the .02 from someone who goes away often.

That's a bummer. I've been in the situation where I had to leave my tank to someone that doesn't know anything. Luckily all the dosing is balanced and taken care of by doser and RKL, the safest thing imo. I hope your tank recovers!

Amen to this! Unfortunately its up to you to select someone that's qualified to care for your animals, or be at the mercy of someone that doesn't. SPS are hard enough for us to care for, I would never expect anything more from anyone else. Not much you can do now anyway. Chalk it up to either a learning experience or just an unfortunate situation. Best of luck!

seems like you're assuming a lot.... what was alk before and what is it now? time frame of change? alk is important but highly overated, imo. years ago i maintained alk with weekly additions and never had problems with sps'. however, a major bounce up or down could cause a problem, but i would expect to see STN vs RTN. RTN being tissue loss in a day or two, or even overnight. If RTN, i would look at large temp change or PH "out of safe range"; some major change.
