fritz rpm

I did SeaChem Reef when I had my 90 gallon system after dabbling in a friends "home made mix" that did more damage than was worth the savings....Currently I have a 24 gallon Nano and am using B-ionic sea water system... only because I can scale it out (with a scale not a cup measure) and have have had great luck with it....But I never has an issue with cost...more with quality!

I switched from RSCP to RPM, first thing I noticed is it dissolves super fast. LOL

Now I maintain my numbers to 9 alk, 480 cal, 1400 mag, on 1.026. Havent tested a fresh salt-mix though.

Any good deals Ive been using RC for the last yearn major problems, but I always add Mg and other traces to perfect it, getting tired of having to add the extra additives when the whole reason was to save money on the salt it ends up being more anyways.. BRS doesn't carry it?

just picked up a 200 gallon box.. got about another 50 gallons of reef crystals pre mixed already for my weekly water change.. excited to mix this up and test out but 1st gotta clean out all the gunk from my mix tank and the IO RC, hope this doesn't create buildup like that did, I'm sick of scrubbing this tank out every 3 months

fritz rpm

Trying out Fritz RPM bucket for first time. Here is my first batch:

18 gallon RODI
9 level cups of Salt (5 lb 7 oz weighed) Bucket Lot #28166
Mixed clear in 30 minutes. Turned off pump. Tested parameters two days later.
77F Room and Water temperature
Salinity 1.025
Alk 7.7-7.8 (Hanna Checker and Salifert)
Cal 425 (Salifert)
Mag 1350 (Salifert)
Potassium 430 (Salifert, first time using this test)
Strontium 10-16 (Salifert, first time using this test, not sure if accurate)
Iodide .01-.02 (Salifert, first time using this test, not sure if accurate)

Almost perfect parameters for me. I will probably mix to 1.0255 and try again for Alk of 8.

I gotta tell ya I just did a complete cleaning of my mix tank which i cleaned about 9 months ago and it was pretty clean after about the same length of time using red sea pro mix salt, I switched to Instant Ocean reef crystals after hearing some people swear by it and brag about how cheap it was.. I liked the effect of the lower alk but let me tell ya after what i just had to go through to get the brown sludge off everything including scrubbing the inner walls of my 125 gallon mix tank i was disgusted.. Filling up 125 gallons of fresh ro now to try my 1st batch of the fritz salt.. I hope i don't have to see the sludge again, it really looked nasty

Not sure if this will translate. This is my mixing vat which was clean and dry, after 4 months of continuous Fritz salt mix. I do a full batch and keep it around 79-80 degrees. It's continuously agitated with a large powerhead. I get roughly 3, 15 gallon (10%) water changes out of it. I do them weekly. Then I repeat.

There's a fine residue, looks like refined mineral build up. Definitely nothing like the sludge I used to get with RC.

I was victim to an "off batch" of Reef Crystals when I had my loaded SPS 180. To say it created issues was an understatement. So I'm definitely biased. I'm liking the consistency with Fritz so far, but again, it's only been 4 months. YMMV.

Cully those pictures of your vat was with the other salt correct? Not Fritz if I'm understanding you correctly.

No thats 4 months of Fritz. The film looks very refined.

If I mixed a batch of RC and let it just circulate with a powerhead at temp for 3 weeks the bucket would have sludge floating in it. The bucket was covered with brown and slimy sludge.

There's build up with both in my experience. The Fritz just looks cleaner to me. Like I said, might not translate well in pictures. The stuff in my bucket now is of zero concern to me.

Ive been using Fritz for about 6 months now But I don't have any sludge in my vat. Maybe because we do it differently? I bring my water up to temp then add my salt. I only let it mix for about 2 hours until clear and in the tank the whole amount goes. I never let my premix salt sit. Just always the way I've done it. Wondering if I've been doing it wrong all this time LOL. I do have RODI water in my Brute for emergencies but not premixed. Hmm..

my corals also paled out from the water being to clean but on a plus side no algea anywhere. I have been feeding my corals twice a week using mysis soaked in polyp booster reef roids and aquaforest aminos and so far within a month my corals are getting there nice colors back

I do it just Like Capt Cully, only my holding tank is a 125 gallon barrel style, I usually do a 60G water change every 10-14 days and I top off with new water and adjust salinity accordingly.. I like to have a good amount of premix on hand "just in case" granted I have almost 400 gallons of water volume in my system. But I can deal with those pics it took me hours of scrubbing to get the brown sludge out last night all through an 8" opening in the top of my vat (I shoulda just went with a 120 tall tank for the same price :(, but that almost looks like a fine sand which one should be expected with vast amounts of salt that I know you use Cully...

I don't heat up my container. I just mix. Heard hearing causes precipitation.

I didn't used to add a heater, and during the summer I don't always need to. My tank is new so I don't like adding the additional stress of a temperature dump when I add cold water to the system. That said, I used to get the sludge with RC regardless. I never saw any direct harm with the parameters I follow. Primarily alk, Ca, mag, occasionally phos. But as I said, their inconsistency was always a concern.

After losing power last week for a few days I took the time to clean out my salt water mixing container. I have been using Reef Crystals, and follow a similar schedule as Cully. Not only was my container nasty with sludge but the amount of precipitate in there was crazy. My Alk and Calcium have been running really low and I have had a hard time keeping it up. Fresh mixed salt water had an Alk of 6.0. I thought with a good cleaning and heating the water before adding the salt mix would help. I mixed up some salt water yesterday and will test when I get home, but maybe I'm due for a switch as well. My tank has had nothing but problems for a long time, could be the salt mix...
