For about a week now my frogspawn and hammer look to be dying. I have no clue Why. All other coral in my tank are doing great sps etc. I have moved down from bottom rock directly to sand bed, but still seems to be unhappy. Any ideas? Cal 450 all 10.8 mag 1350 Sal 1.026.
Currently my ALK is at 10.9 and my PH is at 8.2. I am not seeing any brown jelly which is described in the article. I have since posted, moved the coral down to the sandbed and lowered the vortech a notch. I have also dipped both of them for the second time since i got them just incase. They havent gotten worse, but not better either.
I have always had best luck with frogspawn in very very little to no flow areas. Try and find a spot where there is as little flow as possible and see how it does there.
From my research trying to safe my frogspawn (wall not branching) when they die they look like they have brown jelly sometimes even when they don't. Mine unfortunately didn't make it though I tried my darndest for days to save it. I can't tell is yours a wall as well? I guess they don't frag very well so sometimes they get sick a short time after... They seem to be a little sensitive to any rough treatment by fish etc. (I know mine got done in by getting bumped by our urchin) I really wish yours the best. Frogspawn and hammers are beautiful corals when healthy and happy. Only advice I can give from trying to save mine is.
1. I dipped it in an iodine dip since it was an antiseptic dip to keep any more infection down. I cleaned off any dying tissue while dipping.
2. I dosed my tank with a reef solution that had iodine and vitamin c magnesium etc in it.
3. don't give up because they have been known to come back even after seeming "dead" for months.
Thanks all for the input. Shortly after making this post, I dipped both my hammer and frogspawn just incase. I moved to the sandbed. In lower rock hole. Unfortuantely the hammer did not make it. But the frogspawn is making a comeback and looks a whole lot better. I'll continue to keep an eye on it and keep everyone updated. Thanks again
Don't give up too quickly. I know from experience Frogspawn can recover.
Many years ago, my Tank got Contaminated with Copper.
Contamination pretty wiped out my tank in less than 12hrs.
Notice the dead looking Frogspawn heads in the center. There was no flesh left. Just skeleton. I almost tossed it along with the rest of the dead rotting corals.
However after a total water change and a major Tank clean up, life appeared on it slightly, so I kept it. It kept recovering bit by bit over a period of a few months.
(Morning of Crash)
Here is the same Frogspawn years later.
Today, it (in cave) and it's offspring are my favourites corals in my tank.
