I was with you up until the lily pipes part, haha.
I used them for a long time. Main problem was limited flow options of the out flow and a strainer with slots being too narrow and killing small livestock that got too close. Cleaning is the obvious pain.

These were clunky, but the Lifegard system provided nice flow patterns. Any future planted tanks will be drilled so nothing rides over the sides.
