The pump has a safety feature that monitors the set for drip accuracy (when used to pump saline solution into a human body) and cuts off the pump if the flow rate is wrong.. the mod by passes this monitor so you can change the diameter of the silicon tubing to pump more through.. i.e. i use to use 3/8" tubing to push about 2gpd a distance of 30ft; the standard size is 1/8".. you can see the 3/8" tubing in the pic, it's the part that wraps around the black wheel.
