Petland's Responce
Petland's Responce
Reef Central folks,
I feel as though at some point Petland should defend itself and explain what is currently going on in the news. HSUS is a large fundraising company that has nothing to do with Humane Societies and is also not affiliated with the United States Government. Their main goal is to raise money for their other causes by pulling on American’s heartstrings to get them to donate money to their organization. The company is worth hundreds of millions or dollars and pays out over 10 million in salaries alone to its employees. Doesn’t really sound like an animal friendly organization does it? The HSUS does not operate any shelters and does not actively find homes for any homeless animals. See the link below to a consumer reports article about HSUS.

HSUS has claimed that Petland is the number one contributor to the puppy mill industry. They have said… and I quote…
“In the largest ever puppy mill investigation, HSUS investigators visited 21 Petland stores and 35 breeders and brokers who sold puppies to Petland stores. Investigators also reviewed interstate import records of an additional 322 breeders, USDA reports and more than 17,000 individual puppies linked to Petland stores.â€Â
If you go back and read this statement again you will notice that they are very careful not to say 17,000 puppies came from 35 PUPPY MILLS. The HSUS has a way of making their research sound as though it is one thing when it in fact does not say anything close to what the public perceives.
In fact the HSUS has refused, at this point, to even provide the media and Petland with their findings. They also have taken no action to get any “puppy mills†shut down and not reported any of their findings to the USDA so they can take action.
I urge you to think about supporting an organization that is solely out to make money for its employees. As aquarium hobbyists you would be viewed by HSUS as the enemy. Taking fish out of their natural habitat and housing them in your homes would be against their business model of equal rights for animals and humans.
The bottom line is that I can speak for my stores, Petland Naperville and Petland Wheaton because I have been to our breeders, I know where our puppies come from, and you will see it when you visit our stores and see the health and quality of the animals we provide to the public.
As for the cost issue brought up by a lot of you… a Petland Puppy comes home with an entire package that many people don’t know about including a free spay/neuter, free vet check, micro-chipping, homecoming kit, amber alert service for pets, and many other things that are built into the price. I urge you to come and talk to myself or my partner Mike with any of your concerns.
Thanks for you commitment to animals and we will be sure to continue to provide the best customer service and animal husbandry as we can.
