Fsurocks99's 40 Breeder

It may take him a bit to respond; sometimes he's out of the country and busy. His tank's mostly automated, for that reason. That being said, I believe he's still running it. I hope so, anyway! I remember when he first set it up; it's crazy to see how it is now.

Yea I know he is spotty here and there. He lives or lived in the same city I do lol. Hopefully he still does

That's how I know him, as well. I grew up in Va. Beach. I recently moved away in the past few years for work. We worked together at Fish Safari.

Last time I checked, he was working at ODU. Probably still in your area.

What kinda flow do you have? Looks like everything is growing well but branching out so far that by next year everything will be out of the water. Maybe a little more flow would help keep corals a little shorter and thicker so you can keep them in check easier. Looks good.

Thanks guys! And thanks Kasey for helping with the responses! I try to respond ASAP, but stuff happens...

Sponger - Yes, I'm still in the Va Beach, studying/working as a Master's student/Graduate Research Assistant at ODU. The tank is still going too, though I've been neglectful on the water changes. Thankfully, the tank is automated...

Kasey - I agree! It's crazy to see how far the tank has grown! Been a quick three years or so.

Piper27 - Thanks! For flow, I'm running a 9.5 Mag return and two vortechs on reef crest mode, not sync'd (mp10 @ 80% and mp40 on @ 40%). All of the corals' polyps are moving fairly well for the most part. But, the corals at the end of the tank aren't moving as much as I like.

I'll have to do some tinkering before I leave the country in June for about a month. Going to the Philippines for the first time! Can't wait! Staying for an extra week to do some diving at Apo Island and other areas. I'll try to be more diligent with the responses! :D

Gald to see you're still around and that the tank is rolling along, hopefully we can get some updated pictures before you leave! :D

How's the slimer doing after you topped it? Mine has been doing really well since I got rid of my AEFW and corrected my parameters.

Thanks ChouDawg! I don't see myself stopping the tank anytime soon...I'll definitely get some pics up before I leave!

The slimer is doing great since I cut it in half. Still being stubborn and not branching though. I ended up putting one of the frags next to the mother "colony" and the other at the front on the left side. Good to hear you got rid of them! I haven't had to deal with them, only red bugs, but I know they are much harder to deal with.

Ah that's weird, at least you were able to spread it around a bit...mine has three "tips" now from where I topped it, now all over 1.5" long, getting a bit top heavy actually lol excited to see those pictures when you get a chance.

Nice! Yeah, I'm sure mine will start doing something as well. Just hope it's not a single branch to the surface...

Here are some pictures...

Decided to test the iPhone 5s's macro/field of view capabilities. I'm somewhat surprised at its performance, not bad...now if only it could get the colors right...

Man that overhanging shelf on the end is so sweet, the smooth skin acro from the first shot looks like its sliming down the side of the rock...looking awesome as expected. Your slimer doesn't stick out like a huge finger towards the surface anymore hah

Thanks ChouDawg! Yeah, that is probably my favorite acro. And yes, the tank looks better without that huge finger, plus the fish aren't swimming into it anymore :lmao: It was right in the path of the return which the fish like to 'ride,' but they had to put on the brakes and swerve to miss it.

Looking good, as always, Jack! I still can't believe it's been over 3 years. Have fun in the Philippines!

Thanks Kasey! Time has gone by stupid fast! Will do! We are going to dive off Dumaguete at Apo Island. Hope the reefs still look like the pictures on google images! I'm taking my GoPro so will hopefully get some awesome videos!

So thought I'd give an update. Despite my instincts, I left the Philippines and returned to States about a month ago. Diving at Apo Island was insane! Really aren't words to describe...it was just amazing.

This past week, I moved in with friends closer to campus. Everything but my reef tank is in the new place. I'm torn with how I'm going to move the tank. I've thought about just going fish only or to just take a break from the hobby, but can't do it!!

It's about a 30-45 min drive to my new place, depending on traffic, so transport won't be too bad. Currently, my plan is to sell the corals (keeping a few frags for myself), which will make transport much less stressful for me. I'll also keep the fish and anemone. Downside to the new place is there isn't central air, so the upstairs gets stupid hot. This limits me to one area in the living/dinning room and because of space, I'll have to place the tank against the wall instead of my preferred peninsula style.

But, I look forward to the change. I'm planning to aquascape the rock similar to a coral head (combination of the pics below), like I saw everywhere in Apo. This means a single structure with ~3-6 SPS (ideally Acropora hyacinthus, A. gemmifera, A. samoensis, Pocillopora sp., Seriatopora caliendrum, and S. hystrix) and the long tentacle anemone.

The move should take place within the next two weeks. Because the house is about 100 years old, I'll hang the lights from the wall and not the ceiling, like tmantaylor18 (Taylor's Tech 120 build) did for his tank.

Initially, the tank will be setup with only the essentials (return, skimmer, vortechs, heaters, lights, ATO). This will give the nem time to find its spot and me to set up the Apex and the more complicated things. I'm also planning to build a cabinet to house the ATO reservoir and all the other plugs and outlets to reduce the clutter around the tank. Once things settle down, I'll hopefully get the corals that I don't already have from the list above! In a nutshell, that's it! Sorry for the long post, but I think this helped me more than anything with planning the move...

Glad to hear you're not getting out, that sounds like quite the task but with proper planning and an extra pair of hands I'm sure you can make a smooth transition with minimal losses. What about a chiller for the new setup/location? Are you going to change the overflow somehow or leave it as is? Personally I would try to keep as much coral as possible but I also don't have massive colonies like you. Judging by your past results I don't doubt you'll have an issue getting the frags you keep to grow out nicely. I like the direction you're heading with the single coral head, bommie style I think is what most people usually call it, usually works best in cube tanks though. Excited to see the new setup and best of luck with the move!

Thanks ChouDawg! Definitely not ready to get out yet...

Unfortunately, space is a bit of an issue, but a chiller might be in the works. I'm just afraid of the heat released by the chiller. We only have a single window AC unit (in the same room as the tank) on the bottom floor, so might be an issue.

Currently, I'm planning to leave the overflow as is. I'm really wavering on this decision. If I were going to change it, I would just buy a new tank with a corner overflow. But I'm on a strict budget, so I really can't afford to do that at the moment. There's still about 3-4 inches on either side of the overflow, so it's not too much of an eyesore.

I hate to sell the colonies but it really takes some of the stress off me. I don't mind at all starting with small frags again and watching them grow out. That's one of my favorite parts of the hobby!

Yeah the bommie scape will be interesting, I hope, especially with all of the branching rock I have. Downside is it's a shallow tank, but I plan to give the corals much more vertical room to grow this time around.

If it's a regular 40 breeder, Petco had a $1/gallon sale a few weeks ago, I'm sure they'll have one again soon. If you went that route and sold your current tank you might be able to get close to breaking even. But that might be more work/trouble than you care to deal with. I think full of corals again no one will notice/care about the overflow on the right side.

Thanks. Good to know, but yeah, I'm looking to keep it as simple as possible...
