FT Only: Reef Octopus NWB-150

Currently using the NWB 150 on my tank but it's rated for much higher than my tank volume and not skimming accordingly so I need to downsize. Preferably looking for a NWB-110 or a similare rated skimmer for 75-100g max.

Skimmer works great and is functionally sound, just too strong for my tank.

What water level is yours at? My nwb150 does really well on my 40g DT with 40g sump. About 60g water volume.

I'm at about 8.75" and only 2 fish, small cleanup crew, fuge and a handful of lps. I also bought the pipe add on that goes in gate valve. That's mainly for noise though. Are you unable to make it sit deeper? Just curious

Make what deeper? I built a PVC stand to heighten the skimmer, I could always make it taller. My tank is pretty well stocked and Im only getting tea colored skim

+1 that skimmer should be fine, even over-sized you should pull out dark tar skimmate once it's at the right water level and broken in.

My girlfriend has the same skimmer as you on her 60 gallon cube. It sits in about 7.5" to 8" or water and I have to clean it out either everyday or every other day. Basically, when she opens the door and looks in there. :/ It's a good little work horse for sure. I have her skimmer set about where the cup comes apart from the body. Yeah, try removing the skimmer stand and try that?

Chris, are you sure you have enough bioload to produce the amount of skimmate you expect to get? I have always been disappointed that I don't get the dark tar, or large amounts of skimmate I see others posting. It might be that some corals or something in your tank is benefiting from the wastes prior to it getting into the skimmer. As long as the skimmer is producing lots of bubbles and you're getting pea size bubbles at the collection cup neck you should be good. It helps to keep the neck clean so debris can make it into the cup and not get stuck in the neck gunk. I assume you've checked to make sure the air intake isn't restricted in any way. JP

I would be interested in hearing how you do playing with it. I have the same skimmer on my 55 gallon (with 30 sump) and have had great results with it. It did take some fiddling to get it dialed in, though.

How high do you have your skimmer in the water?
