I am looking for an algae that will live in my fuge (benifit the tank a little) and serve as a food for my sailfin tang. I do skim semi-heavily (not like chad or anything)

currently i am thinking about the following:

Halymenia- Red Leaf Algae

Cladophora- Green Hair Algae (will this bloom and take over my tank? or can i confine it to the fuge?)

Ulva- Sea Lettuce

Red Sea weed

something that would promote and help pod/worm growth would be nice also

also, would a mangrove be worth my time for nutrient export in a fuge?

any other suggestions would be great!

i also posted this in the algae fourm.. but they dont reply :(

What's that stuff with the little grape looking things on it? That's what TWP uses in theirs and I know that my yellow tang loves it.

You getting some good information from that book Matt ?
Tell everyone the title so people can pick it up.

Caulerpa is bad for fish to eat Mayoboy.

Cladophora I would get rid of it, too risky to get in your tank.

Where did you get the Ulva ? That's good stuff.

I can not determin if Mangroves have a large impact on nut exp, but I noticed they grow faster with little to no light on them at all. I think people nuke them with strong light bulbs and too much heat. They are cool to have none the less. I would get one.

Phytoplankton is what the pods want to eat.
I suggest not scraping some of the wall in your sump because copepods will spawn there on the diatoms and cyano.

i dont touch my sump, i let it get nasty!

i plan on getting a mangrove, and then filling my fuge with Ulva or the red sea weed Gracilaria sp., aka tang heaven. ( i perfer the red sea weed)

the book is titled "Algae A problem sover guide" by Julian Sprung. it is a very very very good book. i have learned a ton about different algaes and never knew how good clams, feather dusters, and sponges were to a tank!
