fuge question

i am looking to get a fuge. i have a 55 gal AGA reef tank. i am going back and forth on which fuge shall i get. what are the disadvantages between this two set up?

Depends on what you want the fuge for...algea or pods. Pods get into the tank better with a HOT set up as they just over flow into the tank. The HOT modles tend to be pretty costly and I think ugly. Under the tank can be simply a 10 gal tank and it is out of site. Most HOTs come with a nice light, most that have unseen fuge use a screw in type pc from Menards with a cheap shop light type reflector. Under tha tank can be done for about $50, that doesn't even get you close to a HOT. With an under the tank some pods will make it through the pump and come out alive, not nearly as many as you get in a HOT style.
Hope this helps

i wanted a fuge to serve as an additional filtration for my reef and feed my livestock speciall my goby that i feed with a bottle of tiger pods every other week. i found a HOT fuge with light and a skimmer ( which i will not use ) and is 24x4x2 and includes a light for $300. my other option is to get a 29 gal tank and use my existing overflow to take water to the fuge (spliting it between the fuge and sump) and use a small pump to pump water back to the main tank. suggestions are always welcome.

A 29 gallon will not fit in the stand of a 55 gallon. 10 gallons and some 15 gallons fit nicely.

I would just put your fuge off to the side if it's not too unsightly. I had a hang on fuge for months on my old tank and while there was good pod population those aqua hang on fuges have such terrible "upward" flow (slow) that there was so much "gunk" on the bottom. And because I had so much algea in there I couldn't really get in there to clean it.

I am in the middle of setting up mine right now. I ended up putting a taller acrylic tank right next to my sump. I put two bulkheads in it above the top of my sump so they can overflow back in. Then I just tee'd off the sump return to divert flow into the fuge. The fuge itself is an old sump as well.

To me the HOB Fuges seem way to expensive for what they are.
