Fuge Questions

The sump I have has no separate chamber to set up a fuge. I ordered an Aquaclear hob filter to build a little fuge. I have room on the right side of my sump to hang it.
Then I had an idea.
If I made a little box out of eggcrate could I put some chaeto in it directly in the sump as long as I had a light over it? Here is a shot of what I have to work with. There is some room directly behind the center brace out of view.

If this is a bad idea I can still build the hob fuge.

Sure. A lot of people do it including myself.

Do you think this will work? The water would have to pass through it on the way back to the tank.

That's not going to hold much. If your goal is to give pods a refuge, you've got that in the live rock there. If you want to grow a macro algae, you really need more room than that.

I just want to grow algae to help with nitrates. The space is 5"x5"x10". It's all the space I could come up with. I don't know if that is big enough to do any good.

Outside the stand I already have 1 10 gallon tank for top off and when I'm done cycling I'll need another for a qt tank.
