I was a little skeptical about the coffee filter as well, but tried it on my D-50 and was pretty surprised how well it worked.

I took a shot of my Idaho Grape because I could never really get the purple to come out right in a picture then took a shot after the coffee filter and I was pretty surprised at the results.

I'm always scraping coraline off the back of my tank to take photos. Definately makes it look a lot cleaner.

As far as cropping, the same application you use to resize your photo should also be able to crop it.
