Fully encrusted BB SPS tanks

I've seen this tank in person around the time the video was taken it is no doubt one of the best bare bottoms I've also seen.

One of the UK reefkeepers went to the store where the tank is when he visited the USA and reported that the coral colouration was awesome and that the display was best they'd seen.

The look of that tank was another reason I went BB with my current setup.

yeap,great tank indeed!
thanks for the link!

sahin thank you very much, glad you like it!:-)
means a lot!
my nitrates are always between 0 and 1.no matter what i do never go up.
off course i do water changes every two weeks and i have only 4 fish.
oh and i siphone all the detritus and the bottom is crystal clear except the
coraline algea

i love also the look of the sand especially when it's new and fresh but like
mc acro said it holds too much dirt.imho

soon i will soon try 1 or 2 encrusting montis again at the front of the tank with high flow to see how it goes

Would you want a bottom to be overgrown with Montipora? Detritus would settle in it and be trapped. Fish crap might burn holes in it.

I did a tile grout bottom in my current tank; looks like sand but doesn't blow around with mega-high current.;)

Very cool, looks just like sand. what materials did you use exactly?

I knew of Copps' tank and have seen that video before; but didnt realise it was barebottom.

Well, if one of the greats has a dream tank thats bare bottom, and you are happy with filling the bottom with a few choice corals then I'd say go for it.

I did consider that, as its an issue with the montipora caps on the bottom of my frag tank.

I am willing to give up a few chronic burn spots on some monti's if I was able to rid myself of complications with sand

I pulled the trigger on taking out my sand bed this weekend. thats why I bumped this thread back up.

I have taken out about 50% of my DSB between yesterday and today, I hope to be BB within another week or two. Not sure if I will go with a small bit of crushed coral, or just see about letting the entire bottom encrust with monti's and rics, zoos, and whatever else.

How did you go about removing your sand bed? I've been looking around for the easiest ways to get this done

looks great CUZ!! that is really close to what I am trying to envision.

Adnyf30, I used about a 1/2 hose and siphoned it into a 35g trashcan on wheels.

When I set this tank up, I put the rockwork directly on the bottom, and then backfilled with sand.

mine is semi-bare bottom... have removed 3/4 of the sand and keeping the rest for my wrasses :-)...
