Well I went to EPCOT last weekend and went to look at the tanks they keep there.

I've been inspired (this is jokingly) to want to create a Tank Wash volunteer team.. Like when you see kids out on the corner with their car wash signs?

I say we do this for Disney - here's one of their tanks

YIKES!!!!

I was there about 6 weeks ago and they had just changed around many of the tanks. They have gone downhill quickly!!

Maybe we can offer our services in exchange for a dive in the main tank :)

Eh, so it's some diatoms and some cyano. I've got it too - wanna come clean my tank. ;)

And you can dive the main tank - we did. It costs a bit, but it's a fun dive. Google DiveQuest for details.

Future World Park Hours: 9am - 7pm (seasonal).
Call 407-WDW-TOUR for reservations and information.

DiveQuest is $140.00 per person. Participants must provide proof of a current scuba "open-water" adult dive certificate.
Theme park admission is not required.

They probably leave the tank lights on for a loooong time. I believe they just setup those cylinders recently. I know they moved them for sure.

Last year they looked awesome. Had a huge toadstool and some "nemos"

It isn't just diatoms and cyano - its a LOT of hair algae and majoanos the size of my fist.

All around the tank(s) there were aiptasia and majanos stinging and killing lots of corals. Some of their fish were kinda in so-so condition but the good news is their tangs looked pretty darn handy.

Admittedly upstairs they have tanks sponsored by harbor branch and where they have breeding clowns. These displays were pristine in comparison and actually looked really good.

Their lighting is really super white too for some reason, but the aquarist wasn't in when I was there so I will have to stop by another time to chat them up about their equipment there :)

I was their a few months back- their tanks looked much better then- not great but certainly not completely under the algae as in your pic!

On the other hand- I did get a chance to dive in their main tank- and was quite disappointed. It was neat seeing the sharks just cruising around minding their own business, but on the other hand, most (if not all) of the fish had large HLLE erosions, and other than the fish, the tank was devoid of life- nothing like diving a reef (with all the life, corals, algae, little critters, etc.) I guess it's why I've got a reef tank rather than a FO :)

I worked there as an intern many years ago. Since Disney is a for profit company they can't use volunteers and have to pay any help they get. I highly recommend doing the internship if anyone wants to get experience working at large aquariums. Lots of diving and the pay is nice for an intern pos.

Leather seems to be doing well. I know Sea World keeps up with their tanks though. I saw this amazing tank Sea World had. It was so beautiful.

Well the person that was there said they had run out of inverts. I'm not sure what that means.. they died? got eaten? fried up for dinner in the france exhibit?

Either way she said they were getting some soon and hopefully its a lot. Those tanks are definitely not beyond repair but its kind of scary that they "represent" to so many tourists what tanks look like.

That and I feel bad for the corals getting stung. Whoever running the place probably has different views and Disney's red tape to cut through to do much with the tanks I'm sure but it was like holy cow! when i saw them.

Seaworld to me is more of an aquarium based exhibit and everyone there I've seen works so hard to keep it that way and I couldn't complain- I just haven't been there in a year or so ;p Discovery cove is pretty awesome too but kind of creepy when its crowded. Its jsut weird to look down and see a bunch of peoples bodies floating on top of the water ><

Someone should sell them some Joe's Juice and a EuroReef. I wish they didnt mess with the exhibit. It was so much better last year. I guess they had to make room for the Nemo ride in there.
