Fuzzy unknown anemone or hydroid

Does anyone know what these are? Ignore the Sea Hare. I asked about that in another post.

The 3/16 inch brown tufts of tenticles in the upper right of this picture are connected by hair thin stems. They do respond to touch and they feed, so they are not algae. I suspect they are hydroids.

Yes, they're hydroids. They look similar to a picture in one of my books labelled Myronema sp, in the family Plumaridae. The brown color comes from the zooxanthellae.

Yup!!! Myrionema.
Yahooed it, googled it, found pictures that look exactly like it.
Some say it can be invasive but I'll chance it since something is already eating it in my tank.

Nope.

It vanished for a few months, came back in a small spot, then vanished again.

I put some in a spare holding tank and it is growing, but not invasive. It is very cool in small patches and I'de try to cultivate it in my main reef tank if it could be trusted.


Your quote by the way is quite a coincidence. I HAVE grown a 400 pound pumpkin!

put a small power head on it .. that stuff will grow out of control with a bit of flow....

1. pray
2. get a rusty angel
3. if possible ... get the rocks out w/ hydroids on them, and try to torch the hydroids ... thats what i did with alot of my rocks that had either no coral on, or very little.

I was able to use a pair of tweasesrs and just rip the hydroids from the rock as I held it. I had to remove pretty deep but I did it without torching or treating or any new fish and they're all gone. Good luck.
