GA State Aquarium Friday

Great question, Bill...

I can't really share too much, but it was a proprietary blend of a special epoxy, coloring agent (for tinting to the right color), fine natural sand and crushed pieces of the tank itself from another repair going on topside, above the waterline, at the same time.

Even more important were the techniques used... Not at all what one might expect. The final technique was the use of a 3M pad to "blot" the surface at a very specific point in the curing to get a rock-like texture.

The real active ingredient was epoxy-based, and required mixing to get it to activate and begin curing... If that's what you're asking.

We could have used the stuff to sculpt pretty much anything we wanted. Pretty amazing!

Wow... Just got off the phone with our GA Aquarium rep. We've got another job there... Like, pronto.

I've moved my other clients back a couple of days, quick-filled half a dozen tanks, and am packing up the truck to make another run back there.

They liked our work so much that they've decided to use us again. Luckily, Tim's available (what a fluke!) again, which is great... He did a fantastic job, and I want him on the team again.

We'll be leaving this afternoon and be at the Aquarium again around 10am tomorrow (Saturday). If all goes according to plan, we should be done this job by tomorrow afternoon... With them all standing in the public area again, looking into the tank, trying to find our repairs. :)

Man, it's a good thing we still had some of that epoxy left... I may have to have another batch made and sitting around, just in case.

Meanwhile, I'm going to have to explain to my other clients that they're just going to have to wait... I already broke the news to one, who's a transient "just passing through" and needed a propeller installed (he lost one on his trip). He actually seemed pleased that he's going to have to spend two additional days in pretty, historic Beaufort.

Man, I need some more guys...

...And to think that this is our OFF season... :)

Thanks, guys...

Okay, just got another call... Job #3. They've asked me to put job #2 on hold until Monday so that I can come out and do an estimate for job #3, then do job #2 and job #3 together.

Whew... I need more guys. :)

Yeah, it'd be great to have you there, Bill... The Grand Dame of aquariums...

Catch a flight. I'll pick you up at the airport... ATL. I'll even put you up in a hotel room (Hilton Garden next door). My treat. :)

'Course, you'll have to put up with Tim and me... :goofy:

If we're super-lucky, we might get to dive with the whale sharks and mantas this time.

Plus, you'll get some hands-on experience with that epoxy... It'll knock your socks off.

Dates will probably be 11/27 to 11/29, although I don't know that for sure yet.

Looks like round-trip tickets start at about $450. May be able to find them cheaper, particularly if you move the dates around a bit.

Bill, check on a flight through Memphis. I'll pick you up and the airport and we can drive over together.

I only suggest that, because Memphis is known for very cheap flights... I think they have to do that, so people will come to the city from hell!

Heh... "City from Hell." LOL!

I thought that was Newark? :D

Never been to Detriot - I have heard that Detroit is worse that Newark, even. If Newark's the "City from Hell," then what's Detroit? "Lucifer's Home Town?" :)

I once rode a motorcycle from Tucson, AZ to Hell, California... Just so that I could tell everyone I'd been to Hell and back. No kidding.

Also no kidding: Along the way, I found "Nowhere, AZ." It's in the middle of the Joshua Forest (not really a "forest" at all, but much more like a desert) - where Beavis and Butthead had their bad payote trip (similar to LSD) in the movie, "Beavis and Butthead Do America."

...Of course, I'm showing my age (and mentality) by referencing the movie... :)

The truth is, I quite liked Hell. :) In fact, there was no part of the desert southwest that I didn't find completely, totally, shockingly beautiful. Sure, LA and Phoenix are big cities, and I'm not a fan of being in the big city... But minutes away were either the Pacific Ocean or the Superstition Mountains... So it was gorgeous.

Newark... Pittsburgh... Detriot... I mean, is there any justification why people would want to be there?

I'd take you up on that if I could away from family then :)

If Newark's the "City from Hell," then what's Detroit? "Lucifer's Home Town?" :)

That was my experience with Detroit. Also the first and last time I've ever flown Northwest. After 4 hours sitting on the tarmac and constantly being told we were next in line for take off they finally announced that the plane needed to return to the gate to top off the fuel tanks to replace what had been burned from idling on the tarmac. Not surprisingly the minute we got to the gate the Captain announced the flight was canceled and we should all see the gate agent. So after waiting our turn on a long line, the gate agent asks where we're going and than tells us she can get us on a late flight to Newark. Close enough we can get someone to come get us, so naturally we agree. Well that flight got delayed, delayed again, delayed some more and finally canceled with the words "you can't get there from here tonight" So back to the gate agent, who now tells us they will do nothing for us because he claims we were originally told that nothing was getting out to the east coast hours ago and how we must of been jumping up and down being real jack (fill in the blank) to get someone to have booked us for that later flight. Now had someone actually told us this and offered to put us up, we would have been fine with that. By now every hotel in the airport and in the surrounded area is booked solid. The manager at the airport hotel was being very good and calling every hotel in town trying to help stranded travelers out. She finally found a Day's Inn a few miles away that claimed to have rooms and would send a shuttle to pick people up. Sounds good. About a dozen of us get on this shuttle and find ourselves being brought to a real sleazy looking Day's Inn. Prostitutes in the Lobby using the pay phones to arrange tricks, condom vending machines in the Lobby, drunks passed out in the hallway urinating on themselves, and doors that didn't close or lock. Real nice place. Everyone us walked right back out in horror. Now to make this better, we were traveling with our daughter who was 6 at the time. One of the hookers was nice enough to let my wife use the phone to try and find somewhere else.

3:19am... Tired. Left Beaufort this morning, spent six or seven hours at the GA Aquarium, then headed home. Nothing like a 20-hour work day! :)

Sold jobs 2 and 3. Bid on #4. Looks like we're gonna be pretty doggone busy, Tim...

Alright... 11:26am, and I'm wiping the sleepers from my eyes and getting a cup of joe. :)

I've gotta put a prop on a boat today (poor guy's been waiting for me to do his boat for the past two weeks) and then do another epoxy-related estimate in Points South, SC... About an hour from here. This one in a leaking pond.

Hopefully I can get them both done today, despite my late start. (I had to sleep at some point!)

Meanwhile, I'll be calling the powers-that-be today and selling job #4 and a price increase for job #2. :)

Tim, looks like they want us there Monday, November 30th. Depending on what they want done, we could be done by Wednesday, or we may not be done for a week. :)

I'll keep you posted.

Meanwhile, I'll be pitching this pond fix today, too... And letting you know what comes of it and whether or not it's worthwhile bringing you down here for the repair.

I'll be out and about most of the day today, taking care of my clients that too have been shoved back a couple of weeks.

Just give me a shout when you know more specifics... I'll be ready to roll the moment you need me!

-Tim
