Gaping clam?

How can you tell when a clam is gaping? Is it just when the mouth is open wide? How do you correct this? If I have small maxima clams, how long do you need to target feed them, or is it until a certain size in inches? Thank you very much.

Usually means that it's trying to get more light for the symbiotic algae.

As I understand, open much wider, than usual ~30 degrees angle, and is not closing in response of shading. I had seen something like this once, and moved immediately clam in another tank (good to have another one for emergencies ).

There should be separate Clams or Mollusks forum, here at RC. May have a sticky thread.
