Garden of the Sea - Was Front Range Aquatics

Nothing to see Move along
The building is painted and a new sign is up! The actinic lights were on this evening at about 10pm.

I don't know when they will open, but it looks like they will open!

Well thats exciting. Hopefully they'll carry more than just tank after tank of coral. I want to see some drygood selection and some fish. On a side note...they could have come up with a more inspired name, lol.

IMO local shops can't compete with online meagastores as far as drygoods go. I'd much rather see tank after tank of nice and reasonably priced corals than suppliments, sand, salt and powerheads that are priced more than 2x's what you find them online. I'm sure someone is going to say that we need to suport the LFS's and a little more pay more to support them and that's fine, but if I can find something much cheaper online then that's where I'm buying. Kind of makes me wonder how a shop in HR has stayed open for so long.

I had talked to JD (new owner) couple of weeks ago, and he said they were trying to open by mid-June, but it it looked like they had a lot more work to do than that.

The frag tanks and big display were stocked, and they had several tanks along the walls cycling at that time. I know they sell a lot of corals on eBay, he did not mention if they were going to have fish or not.

His new sign says

Garden of the Sea
Saltwater Fish and Corals

So he should have fish.

pesonally, i hope he carries lots of dry goods at reasonable prices. that would save having to have everything shipped. i would rather spend my money locally. even better: he should carry big tubbs of bulk supplies like kalk, mag, and calcium. he can forget all those snake oil remedies and stock what people really use and need.

OK, first, it would be pretty foolish for a fish store not to carry fish, lol. I've never heard of a store that carries only coral. We must realize that there are still plenty of people out there that have fish only tanks still. And to make money and get those people in to the building it's kinda necessary to carry fish. That building has so much space, I hope it's used better. I mean when you walk in there is an entire room to the left. That could be stocked with drygoods.

And speaking of dry goods.....here's the thing. Can I get things cheaper online? Of course. But do I want to have to order every little thing? Heck no. I don't understand why I'd want to order little things like suppliments and such. Bulbs....that's another thing I'd prefer not to have to order. I thought Steve's bulb prices were more than reasonable. Certain items I'll still order because stores seem to jack up the prices on those(uh....powerheads? Hello.). It's not just that I like to give my money locally, but if I have a problem it's easier. I also don't want to have to deal with shipping. And then there's that instant gratification thing......

I was talking with Ki a while back and he had told me that the only reason he carries dry goods at all is for those that need something right now. He said that he bought things from one of the online retailers for less than his supplier sells the same product for. In light of that news, I never expect to see a big selection of dry goods in LFS anymore. It would be nice though!

Where is this place???
Fort Collins. On Hwy 287. It is not open yet as far as I know.

Still waiting to pick up some coral I got off ebay from them, they said they are being held up by electrical issues and hope to be open by the weekend. (I have heard by the weekend 3 times now) but it sounds like they are just waiting on contractors to finish...

Just got off the phone w/ JD. He has run into a few snags along the way but he is planning to open in the future. He is waiting for the name to be approved by the state, a few things the owner of the building needs to complete, and a few other things. While these issues seem minor the are all out of the control of him and his wife. As many of you know the previous store was not in great shape and many things need to be fixed/ replaced. He did not buy FRA. He wanted the equipment i.e. tanks lights ect for his online business. This location is most likely temp. His main focus has been with higher end corals so hopefully we will soon have a great new resource.

Why bother moving in to the location if it's only going to be temp? I'm assuming he has a "day job" and he's certainly making money off of ebay. I'd personally just wait until I found a location that I was in love with. Why go through all of this trouble twice?

He really didn't have a choice. His plan was to purchase the equipment in order to increase his online business. He was told the previous owner was to be out by the 15th of the month in order to give him two weeks to move out. He was not out until the 28th, giving him three days to move everything. The landlord wanted a new lease. So he is now having some issues with the landlord and does not think it will be a great permanent home.

if it was me, i wouldnt do it just because of the commute. longmont to foco is a good 30 minute-plus commute for JD. i hope it works out though because we need a fish-coral store in foco badly. it doesnt suprise me that the landlord wants more cash. seems to be the norm lately.

I drive by there several times a week and the lights are still on at night, but no other activity has been seen lately.

I did see some ripped carpet out a couple of weeks ago.
