Garlic?

I did not feed it either. It was more topical in nature. I am just speaking from my own personal experience when I say it helped prolong the life of the fish until I could administer a real medication. Take it for what its worth.

There are lots of things folks do with their tanks because 'somebody said it was a good idea' or 'I read it somewhere'. The mere fact something exists in a commercially available product does not mean it is based on any verifiable science or has undergone ANY kind of efficacy trails. No FRTA (Federal Reef Tank Admininstration :lol:) I'm afraid.

Perhaps the the thing that seems to attract the most bad science is in the treatment of ich. Even seasoned reefers, who ought to know better, proliferate these myths. Doesn't mean, under certain circumstances, ich isn't manageable, but more often than not it proves disaterous to try.
 
I'm always concerned about organics I put in the aquarium water.

The same reason Lobotomies were so popular in the 1940's and 1950's to "cure" psychiatric disorders, it sometimes takes actual scientific facts and studies a bit of time to catch up with the hype and high number of people looking for quick and easy cure-alls.
 
Speaking of organics, I feed my yellow tang and foxface bananas, oranges, broccoli, pineapple and and brussle sprouts. None of these would cause the fish any issues down the road right? I know brussle sprouts and broccoli are fine but what about fruit? My clownfish love citrus fruits and my new blue throat trigger eats it as well.
 
My fish love it, they are healthy and all over 2 years old. My mandarin will eat frozen mysis since I've used it (garlic guard) so he's no longer reliant on most pods.
Garlic has been a secret weapon in the bass fishing tournement world to the extent that it is now common place and is proven to entice fish to feed. And in the aquarium world a well fed fish is a healthy fish. I've never had an episode of Ich but did suspect my foxface had it when I first got him. No special treatment and he's know about 4" and healthy as a horse!!! And yes some of his nori sheets have garlic.
I'm not a hater of it and have no reason to be suspect of any bad effects. I have also used it to train my suns (yellow and black) to open as soon as they get any hint of garlic in the water, making feeding them easy.
I also have no problems with vampires!!!!!
 
It has helped me keep some of the most beautiful and healthy fish in my tank. It made a blenny attach the turkey baster once I mixed the garlic and put it near him and squirted some in his face. Now as soon as he sees it, it's his free for all food source..this after 8 months of him just looking at as I feed other things.

Seriously, I know many many that believe in the garlic. Warewolves? I have some pellets that have garlic in them, fish do like'em.

Hell, I just bought a $30 bottle of Ick Kick, what the hell do I know....

I've been using the ecoaqualizer. Stopped feeding my tank completely. Everything is thriving except my yellow tang, my purple tang, my lion fish, my trigger, my cardinals, my dotty back and my clean up crew. One of my clowns is also sick. His mate is sleeping peacefully on my carpet. So cute. Corals look great, they're made out of plastic. Just wipe the algae off and they're good as new.

ROTFLMAO. I had forgotten about the ecoaqualizer!
 
I think using some of the garlic it as an appetite enhancer for fish might be ok in small amounts but I have trouble getting past potential negative effects like damage to gut flora and fauna , transient hypoglycemia and interference with ureagenesis and lipids which may be associted with heavy or long term use. Seems to be at lest as much potential downside as upside for using it with marine fish or bringing in significant amounts it to a reef tank .
 
I only used the garlic once when I ran out of other options. Surprisingly it helped, but i haven't had any other need for garlic since.
 
What about the garlic they use in ON or NLS pellets? Is it not fresh and therefor no other benfit other than fish seem to like the smell/flavor of the garlic stuff more than regular?
