what kind of garlic do you use to soak ur fish foods in any special liquid garlic or do you just throw some minced garlic in with the food while it is soaking?

Garlic certainly has a therapeutic effect on fish. This is no longer contested. The actual ingredient and what it does is still undecided.

Stomach worms are erradicated by garlic and most importers feed it during quarantine. Ectoparasites seem to be less effected, but the fish do recover faster when garlic-laced food are fed during therapy.

I simply press fresh garlic cloves and add them to my food mix, give it 1/2 hour to soak and then feed. My tangs and rabbitfishes love the stuff. They never get Cryptocarion or Amlyoodinium. For me, it works.

Lee birch says garlic is a myth and does nothing for fish.
"At the very least, garlic does have some proven anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-parasitic, and antiviral properties (Bartelme, 2003 and and Cortes-Jorge, 2001)."

But the question at hand isn't for a debate on garlic.

You can buy garlic additives at the LFS, but these hobby additives are expensive for the amount that you get.

Fresh garlic cloves will give you the best garlic juice/extract, but you can also purchase garlic juice from the grocery store.

I just grind up 2 or 3 cloves with the rest of the ingretients in my home made ration. I don't know who Lee birch is, but thousands of hobbyists will attest to the FACT it does something.

I grate the garlic fresh every feed, place it in a tea strainer and squeese the juice out into the food about 10- 20 drops, no problems for clams anemones and corals, watch your fish god buck wild.

Cool, hey does anyone know if blended brocolli will absorb it or should I freeze the brocolli and then add the garlic with my usual frozen blend?

I don't think brocolli is a good thing to feed fish. Many have difficulties digesting land grown vegetation - even lettuce. I would avoid feeding it.

Hmmm ok, I've only been feeding small portions to my angels every 3 or 4 days because they absolutely love the stuff, but if it's bad for them then I guess I'll have to harvest some aglae soon.

Some people don't like the idea of feeding terrestrial foods to sea creatures, but it's done often - from broccoli to bananas.

Actually, I just finished reading the Reefkeeping Magazine article on the Georgia Aquarium, and they mention that they feed romaine, bokchoy and broccoli to the fish in The Pacific Barrier Reef exhibit. Here's a link:

At the bottom of the article, a link is provided to their forums on RC. You could always shoot them a Q about broccoli.

Yes I feed romaine in the mourning and evening along with nori and have had tremendus success with it. I have a naso that was raised entirely on romaine for over 4 yrs with only romaine as his diet. He is a beautiful big boy.
