Does garlic treat bacterial infections? My yellow tang has a bacterial infection. I put medication in the tank last night....I will not see him till this afternoon. However, I am going to see my LFS tonight and was thinking of picking up some garlic to soak his food in. Just curious as to if it helps treat anything....thanks

no it doesnt, it a contraversal subject garlic, however some of us believe it temps finniky eaters to feed and some guys believe it can help keep the fishes immune system healthy if used, i doubt very much it kills bacterial infections

In my experience there is no proof that it helps treat infections however it does stimulate appetite and that in turn boosts the imune system which helps fight the infection. Just my experience

right, it just entices fish to eat, helping their overall health and immune systems. often which fish are infected with something, they tend to not eat, and the garlic helps.

I just want to make sure.....

I just want to make sure.....

So when a fish has a bacterial infection, and then they eat, it promotes the fish to get better? It is no case a "cure", but the fish eating is what helps the fish overcome the infection? Besides the use of medication.....

It may encourage feeding in some fish.
It may help the immune sytem but that is very doubtful. The active ingredient in garlic which is believed ot enhance human immune system response is allicin. It remains active for only afew hours after a fresh garlic is squeezed. Even if one were to assume it could somehow be taken up by marine fish and have an immuno effect, most of the hobby products are conentrates with preservatives making the likelihood of any immune boosting effect even more dubious.
It is not an effective treatment for any known fish infection or parasitic infestation.

Garlic was all wqays given to me as a child to prevent worms, and was rummerd to help fend off mosquitoes. plus I like it on my food. maybe it has some anti parisidic qualitys as well helping apitite

that is my understanding from what I've read and experienced as well.

It seems more effective against parasites such as ich and fluke than against bacterial infections. Your only real option is to ignore or to catch and treat. You get garlic at the grocery store, just as easily. Crush and feed, using rubber gloves.

Ya.....Sorry...Garlic helps the fish eat the food...They seem to love it......BUT it helps with stress..That causes ICK...

As far as a parasite......NO....You need another form to kill it
