GBTA....Anemone Log

Lol....it stunk just not quite as bad as I thought.....done two 10%water changes now .....all parameters still look good and ready for the new nem on Tuesday. I upgraded to priority overnight this time so we will see if that helps to. Ill keep this thread updated and hopefully I have better luck this time.

That gbta looks awesome, good luck with it! LADD nems normally come in great, I believe it was the heat that did the damage.

As for the acclimation I waited for temp. Then acclimated with a quarter cup of water every 5 mins for an hour. After the first two quarter cups I dumped half the bag water out and continued (to get rid of as much ammonia as I could). Also I didn't test the bag water right away so I wasn't even sure it hadd ammonia in it, Just noticed the mouth was open around an inch.

Acclimating things that have been shipped is a different beast. The hour long bath in ammonia combined with elevated temps likely did it in. When you open the bag, the pH changes and converts waste product into ammonia (prior it's in a less lethal form). Temp acclimate with sealed bag and drop it in the tank if salinity is close. You could also potentially use something like Prime (though don't over dose).

I kee my salinity almost the same as DD does on there tanks for coral/nems (1.025 is them im at 1.026) I didnt think an hour would be to long but then again I didnt know the ammonia was that high either. When I got it the cold pack was still mildly cold and the temp in the bag was actually pretty close to 80 degrees. Before I even opened the bag its mouth was open thats what was so dissapointing to see. It was open over an inch with white/brown guts comming out (thats what it looked like).

The new one my wife actually likes the way it looks better, I payed the extra 10 for priority shipping and Ill pick it up from fed-ex when they open around 9am (unless somehow they mess it up and it gets put on a truck again). I really like the purple/blue tips on the new nem.

Hey, I didn't get my nems online, but as part of a complete tank setup. Anyway, I ended getting two bleached BTA's(I think they are green), S. Handdoni, and a LTA. At least you didn't have that amazing looking GBTA for 1.5 weeks to then have it die... I lost the LTA after 1.5 weeks after it moved right next to my S. Handdoni :( What a shame, the LTA was winning the battle of stings for the first five minutes. After being stung my LTA lasted about 5 hours before it started decomposing. GL with the next GBTA looks like another amazing one!

Alright, shipment sent, called fed-ex and confirmed that it will be held at the airport (thus minimizing transfer number and time). Everything on course I should pick it up at the airport tommorow morning at 9am, 8 minute drive home and begin acclimation. I have 30 gallons of fresh salt water made up just in case a large water change becomes required, new carbon (again). All levels look good, wish me luck. :P

Post #56 is the new GBTA that I ordered, Ill have it tommorow morning just after 9am. Its a little brighter green then the last one with purple/blue tips. About the same size and looks more bubbled then the other one, hopefully it comes in very healthy. I did a 10% water change tonight and changed the carbon earlier. Hopefully im ready for tommorow.

If its not one thing its another.... not only did fed-ex put it on the truck after I had it held at the facility (next time ill ship it directly to them, lesson learned) LIVE AQUARIA SENT ME THE WRONG NEM!!. I got a RBTA thats less then 1 inch.... Im just having no luck with this I swear. I called LA already they noted my account and asked me to email them a picture of the one I received. Ill post a picture of it here as soon as I get it in the tank, the water In the bag looks cloudy so it will be a fast acclimation over about 5 minutes once the bag is open.... my levels should match it closely, temp acclimating now.

Ugggggh!!!!

For what it's worth, RBTAs typically sell for more than their green counterparts? They also grow pretty fast. You should definitely see what they'll do for you, but they may be willing to let the RBTA stay and credit you.

Water in there bag had between .25-.50 ammonia.... I added half a cup of my water to the bag waited 5 minutes (while I was testing ammonia) and added it to the tank. Again this is the wrong nem but it either goes in a tank or dies so LA told me to put it in the tank. Here are pictures of it from in the bag to in the tank.... Its not completly deflated like the last one, mouth is open around half an inch (nems disc is only a little over an inch and a half or so) It doesnt look near as unhealthy as the last one, but still not tip top. I found it a nice hole to fit into on my top center rock, its starting to inflate now. Also Im not neccessarily upset I got a RBTA, but I really did want a larger nem. They did say they will most likely credit my account so in many ways I did come up a little if this nem makes it (which its not inside out like the last one so hopefully it does)

Ill keep this post updated with pictures. As well as updates from LA on how they handle the situation.

I hate to be the bearer of good news, but that looks more like a rainbow BTA, which is even more expensive than the RBTA. My RBTA doesn't have *any* green in it.

BTAs in general are pretty hardy, so I'm really hoping it pulls through for you. It should be a very nice looking nem if it recovers. Remember, no attempts at feeding until that mouth is closed up like a bear trap. Also, don't panic if it shrinks down a lot. Mine will do this some times. I've read that it's them swapping out their internal water (which may have some ammonia from the bag) for fresh tank water.

Almost every time that someone on here has posted about receiving the wrong item they have let the person keep it at no charge. When this happened to me their reasoning for this is that it has already been stressed being shipped once. Now it will have to be re-shipped, acclimated..... So they would rather lose out on the sale of the animal than to potentially kill it by having you send it back. You should get a full credit/refund for the wrong item and most likely will keep the RBTA.

Yah Its def multi colored, from the bag I could only see the red. Like I said I am not totally upset, just frustrated (cause the last one had died and this one was wrong) But LA has done nothing but try to help me out as much as possible with any problems and has had great customer service. I understand sometimes things do get mixed up and that there is a chance someone else received my GBTA. Thats actually worse for that person since im sure they payed more. Again thank you to LA for helping with these kind of situations (its the reason even with mixups Ill still go through them, great customer service says it all).

Yah you are most likely right kduen.... I just want to see it inflate a little more and to close its mouth. How long do you guys think it will take to close its mouth back up and re-infalte it self, This is my first real shot at keeping nems so I have little to no experience with them.

For what it's worth, it looks a lot better in your tank than it did in the bag. Mouth is closing up a bit. I'll be curious to see what it looks like by tonight or even in the morning. I'd check it every hour or two and see the condition of the mouth. I bet it'll surprise you how quickly it pulls it back closed. Though I think you'll still have a severely shriveled BTA soon (water changing), in a couple days, it should have mouth closed and be inflated.

It expelled a little slime (possibly some of its zoo) brownish whitish mix. Wasnt to much. Mouth already looks like its closing back up a little bit. How long do you guys think it will take this thing to grow to 5-6 inchs or so..... It looks like right now fully inflated it would be around 2-3 inchs. Also tank parameters are good and the corals I have look like they are growing good.

First...This nem will probably survive...
Second...This nem is oustanding
Third...This is probably a rainbow
Fourth...I am jealous

and good luck

I got my RBTA in March and it was about 3"-4"... I'll turn this into a picture story, thank you photobucket.

Three months later under PC lighting... this is where it was:

And here it is now 2 months after LEDs:
Tank6-29-11.jpg

But, that picture is a bit deceptive, since it split and half went one way and the other half went the other way.
RBTAs1.jpg

Fully expanded, the large piece dominates the back of the tank. My clone is about what the initial RBTA was.
So this is the growth in 5 months with feeding two to three times a week and half the time on LEDs.
