GBTA - Just how smart....

....are they to know if the place they have taken a foot on to is the right spot for them?

I ask because after I added the GBTA to the tank it made it's home between two rocks that are close to the substrate (approx 18" from light source, a PC 50/50 with a 12" led bar 6500K supplement). I read the FAQ and different sites about anemones wandering, searching for a proper spot for their needs but, just how smart are they to do that on their own?

It has been 5 days since it was introduced and I have fed it raw shrimp (soaked in Zoe) three times. It accepted the pieces readily, albeit slow, and has not thrown any up. I have a thread in the Nano Forums (info on tank too) with pics of it and added the same one here.

My questions is, will it move if it feels the need for more light or should I wait a few more days and attempt moving it myself to a place higher up in the tank?

Thanks!

nice BTA dude! mine doesnt bubble up that well, i got mine for about 2 months now it only changed location once and since then never moved, my maroon clown hosts it, and whenever i feed raw shrimp (every 3 days) my maroon clown feeds my BTA.

Nice! I would say that it could probably do ok with feeding it a little less often, twice a week for instance. Sometimes they will stay put just cause they know there's food there so that may help it get moving to better lighting. But to be honest if it's happy there leave it be. And unless it's in danger I would suggest NEVER moving an anemone yourself. You can hurt them if you're not careful and it might just wander back anyway. :)

When I first added my BTA to my tank I put him right on the front of the rock, and I was surprised to see he stayed there. Til about 3-4 days later he crawled to the back of the rock and now you can only see him when he's fully opened up haha. Oh well. As long as he's happy I guess.

Your anemone should be okay in terms light where it is now. And yes, they do tend to move if the conditions aren't satisfactory. You asked how smart they are, they don't have a brain, so I'm not sure smarts explains their ability to find a suitable location. However, they have been around for a very long time and they are very sensitive to their environment and will stay put when they are in a place that suits their needs and will roam when things don't suit them, whether it's water quality, lighting, water-flow, attachment site, etc.
